Chargers top rival Rebels in area contest

The Cornerstone Christian School boys’ basketball team defeated rival Coosa Valley Academy 53-26 in an Alabama Independent Schools Association Class 1A, Area 1 contest Jan. 10.

Kendall Moore led the Chargers (10-4 overall, 2-1 in AISA Class 1A, Area 1) with 22 points, including four 3-pointers, in the victory.

Chase Payne added 17 points, including three 3-pointers in the win. B.J. Smith added three points.

Sterling Reither, Tim Warren, Clayton Halbert, Hagan Joiner and Nick Gold contributed two points each. Auston Wingard finished with one point.

The Chargers, who knocked down 8-of-10 free throws in the win, outscored Coosa Valley 33-16 in the opening half and held the Rebels to 10 points in the second half.

“Our goal on defense is to never let anybody get an uncontested shot,” said Cornerstone Christian coach Tim Smith. “Tonight we did a good job.”

GIRLS

The Cornerstone Christian School girls’ basketball team defeated rival Coosa Valley Academy 50-41 in an Alabama Independent Schools Association Class 1A, Area 1 contest Jan. 10.

Savanna Upton led the Chargers with 16 points in the victory.

Destiny Dillard and Jana Kelbie Armstrong added 12 points each.

Kaylan Rich led Coosa Valley with 15 points.
