Wilsonville man charged with attempted murder, kidnapping

The Wilsonville man who allegedly dragged a woman behind a vehicle on May 20 now faces additional charges.

On May 20, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a female being dragged by a vehicle on Alabama 25 in Wilsonville. Deputies responded to the area and located the victim lying in the parking lot of a local business. A subsequent investigation led to warrants being issued for the arrest of Kirt Bernard Benson, 41, from Wilsonville.

At approximately 10 a.m., members of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force located Kirt Benson and took him into custody on arrest warrants for Domestic Violence second degree and Violation of a Protection from Abuse Order, totaling $156,000 in bonds.

On May 23, Sheriff’s Office investigators obtained additional warrants for Benson. In addition to the charges of May 22, Benson is now charged with one count each of Attempted Murder, Kidnapping first degree and Domestic Violence third degree and two counts of Domestic Violence by Strangulation or Suffocation. Benson remains in the Shelby County Jail, and the total bond for all charges is $762,000.
