Atkins had previously been charged with three counts of first-degree sexual abuse, one count of enticing a child for immoral purposes, one count of electronic solicitation of a child and one count of a school employee having sexual contact with a student under the age of 19.

Atkins was initially arrested March 29 after investigators determined he and a student were exchanging phone texts and social media messages that were sexual in nature. He was out on bond awaiting trial for the original six charges when he was arrested Aug. 15.

Atkins is being held on $200,000 bond at the Shelby County Jail.
