Former OMMS teacher gets additional sex abuse charge

ALABASTER — A former Oak Mountain Middle School teacher and band director, who has already been charged with six sexual abuse offenses, received an additional sex crime charge Aug. 15.

Jeffrey Scott Atkins, 39, was arrested at his residence in the 1200 block of 6th Avenue NW in Alabaster and charged with one count of a school employee engaging in a sex act with a student under the age of 19 years.

Atkins had previously been charged with three counts of first-degree sexual abuse, one count of enticing a child for immoral purposes, one count of electronic solicitation of a child and one count of a school employee having sexual contact with a student under the age of 19.

Atkins was initially arrested March 29 after investigators determined he and a student were exchanging phone texts and social media messages that were sexual in nature. He was out on bond awaiting trial for the original six charges when he was arrested Aug. 15.

Atkins is being held on $200,000 bond at the Shelby County Jail.
