Pelham shuts out Spain Park in area opener

The Pelham Panthers softball team opened Class 6A, Area 8 play with a 6-0 victory at Spain Park March 12.

Pelham (15-2, 1-0) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning before Whitney Gillespie hit a three-run home run in the third to give the Panthers a 5-0 advantage. The Panthers added a run in the fifth to seal the 6-0 win.

Rebekah Fox pitched seven innings and allowed no runs on six hits with six strikeouts in the Pelham victory. Haleigh Sisson took the loss for Spain Park allowing four earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.

Gillespie led Pelham batting 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and a run scored. Emily Spain added a triple while batting 2-for-3 and a RBI.

Mary Beth Glass and Madi Gipson went 2-for-3 to lead Spain Park.
