Police seek public’s help in locating fraud suspect

The Vestavia Hills Police Department is looking for a man with Alabaster ties who has allegedly been involved in several thefts by deception in the Birmingham metropolitan area.

Police are seeking information on 42-year-old Jason Brandon Mears, whose last known address was in Alabaster. According to Vestavia police, Mears has an outstanding warrant for probation violation with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office in connection with several thefts by deception incidents.

Mears also has an outstanding misdemeanor warrant with Vestavia Hills for allegedly defrauding a resident for solicited tree work, according to Vestavia police.

According to Vestavia police, Mears currently is contacting “victims requesting money to be sent to him for a variety of hardship claims. Claims range from (a) broken-down vehicle to being stranded with his family.”

Police said Mears was last “known to be in the company” of a white female between the ages of 30-35 with sandy blond hair who drives a dual-wheeled white pickup truck.

Officers are encouraging anyone who is contacted by Mears to call the Vestavia Hills Police Department at 823-1153 or 978-0230. Those with information on Mears can also submit an anonymous tip on the Vestavia Hills Police Department Facebook page or text a tip to 274637 and include the phrase “VHPD.”
