MONTEVALLO – Many University of Montevallo student-athletes took time off from training schedules and studying for exams to help out in the community during the Big Event on Saturday, April 6.

The Big Event, which is now held at more than 70 universities across the country, was founded at Texas A&M University in 1982 as a way for students to say thank you to the surrounding community. The University of Montevallo follows the same format with a one-day service event where students thank the community that supports them by completing tasks at homes and businesses in the community.

The University of Montevallo women’s soccer team participated in a Habitat for Humanity project in Calera.

The Montevallo women’s basketball team participated in a project at the Church of the Holy Comforter, cleaning flower beds, replanting shrubs and raking leaves.

The Montevallo men’s and women’s cross country and women’s track and field teams also helped paint, trim branches and rake leaves at a local residence.
