Montevallo women’s golf fifth after first round of conference tournament

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The University of Montevallo women’s golf team is currently in fifth place in team standings following the opening round of the Peach Belt Conference championship tournament April 20 at Callaway Gardens.

The Falcons collectively carded a 48-over par 332 in the opening round, which leaves Montevallo 25 strokes behind tournament leader Lander University after the first round. The Falcons edged Columbus State, North Georgia and Young Harris in the opening round.

Armstrong Atlantic is currently second in team standings after carding a 25-over par 309 in the first round, while UNC Pembroke is in third place after shooting a 28-over 312 in the opening round.

Freshman Morgan Natale, who led the Falcons with a 3-over par 74 in the first round, is currently fourth in individual standings at the conference tournament. Natale posted three birdies on the front nine and was tied for the lead at 1-under par after nine holes before finishing with five bogeys on the back nine.

Teresa Hernani of Lander University and Meghan Moore of UNC Pembroke are tied for the lead in individual standings after posting identical rounds of 1-over par 72 on the first day of the conference tournament.

Sophomore Ashlee Beck fired a 10-over par 81 in the opening round, which places her in a tie for 16th overall in individual standings. Junior Hilary Shaner shot a 15-over par 86 in the first round, which places her in a tie for 27th overall in individual standings.

Junior Kira Chauhdry, who is currently tied for 31st overall in individual standings, posted a 10-over par 91 in the opening round of the tournament. Senior Kayla Witt rounded out the group of Montevallo golfers with a score of 105 strokes, which places her 37th overall in individual standings.

The Falcons return to action in the final round of the Peach Belt Conference tournament Sunday, April 21 at 7 a.m. CST.
