Falcons split doubleheader with Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of Montevallo baseball team split a doubleheader with Georgia College in the first two games of a three-game Peach Belt Conference series April 26.

The Falcons plated six runs in the top of the ninth inning on their way to a 12-6 win over the Bobcats in the opening game of the series before dropping the second game of the doubleheader, 10-9.

Junior Jackson Slaid led Montevallo (31-17 overall, 16-13 in Peach Belt Conference) in the opening game of the series as he finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a homer and a pair of doubles. Slaid drove in five runs and scored two runs in the victory.

Sophomore Vinny Rodriguez, who drove in one run and scored four runs, finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. FreshmanBrandon Marshall went 2-for-5 at the plate and drove in one run.

Sophomore Zack Willoughby, who drove in one run and scored one run, went 1-for-2 at the plate at the homer. Sophomore Chad Collum finished 1-for-2 at the plate.

Senior Austin Dubberly went 1-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs. Freshman Jeremy Hyde finished 1-for-3 at the plate. SeniorAndrew Hill, who drove in one run and scored one run, went 1-for-4 at the plate. Freshman Thomas Bradey drove in three runs, while junior Will Fulmer scored two runs in the win.

Freshman Aron McRee (4-0) picked up the win in relief after pitching three scoreless innings while allowing just three hits with a strikeout and two walks.

Senior starter Michael Shreves allowed six earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and four walks in six innings.

The Falcons scored three runs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Fulmer led off the game with a walk before scoring on a RBI double to left field by Rodriguez. Dubberly, who singled up the middle, scored on a RBI sacrifice fly to center field by Slaid. Rodrriguez scored on a RBI ground out by Bradey.

Georgia College tied the game at 3-3 with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Anderson led off the inning with a single down the right-field line before scoring on a RBI single to right-center field by Ardeeser. Bick, who reached on a walk, scored on a RBI single down the right-field line by Maas. Ardeeser scored on a RBI single to center field by Hinshaw.

Montevallo took a 4-3 lead with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Rodriguez singled down the left-field line before scoring on a RBI sacrifice fly to right field by Bradey.

The Bobcats responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 6-4 lead. Maas, who led off with a double down the left-field line, and Sandlin, who reached on a walk, came around to score on a two-run single by Hazel. Hinshaw, who reached on a walk, scored on a RBI single by Hogenkamp in the inning.

The Falcons tied the game at 6-6 with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Rodriguez, who reached on a walk, came around to score on a two-run homer by Slaid over the wall in left-center field.

Montevallo scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning to clinch the victory. Willoughby sparked the Falcons with a pinch-hit solo homer to lead off the inning.

Fulmer and Dubberly, who both reached base after being hit by a pitch, came around to score on a two-run double to right-center field by Slaid. Rodriguez, who reached on a walk, scored on a RBI sacrifice fly to center field by Bradey. Slaid scored on a RBI single to left field by Hill, who scored on a RBI single by Marshall later in the inning.

Hill led the Falcons offensively in the nightcap after finishing 4-for-5 at the plate with a homer and a double. Hill drove in three runs and scored three runs.

Bradey, who drove in two runs and scored one run, went 2-for-4 at the plate. Slaid finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and scored one run. Dubberly finished 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in two runs.

Fulmer went 1-for-4 at the plate and scored one run. Junior Todd Thompson, Rodriguez and Marshall scored one run each.

Freshman reliever Cody Hughes (2-1) was tagged with loss after giving seven earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in one inning.

Junior starter Alex Guilford allowed just three earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.

The Falcons return to action in the final game of the three-game Peach Belt Conference series against Georgia College on Saturday, April 27. First pitch is set for noon CST.
