Howard Barnes was born Feb. 16, 1929, in Hueytown, the youngest son of Albert Wright and Ethel Lawrence Barnes. He liked to go fishing and hunting as a young boy. He went to Fairfield High School and graduated in 1947. Married Mary Nell Palmer in 1949 and worked for Don Drennen for a short period then on to a lifelong career with Alabama Power Company. While at the power company, he worked as a licensed land surveyor mapping the Power Company Lakes. He was a member of Alabama Power Company Energizers and the Shelby County Cattleman’s Association. He enjoyed volunteering his time. In 1979, he and Mary Nell moved to Montevallo. He retired from Alabama Power after 35 years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Nell Palmer; three children, Denise Bevis Ferrell (Russ Ferrell), Howard Bruce Barnes (Krista Barnes) and Cindy Cason. He has six grandchildren, Kevin Bevis, Ryan Bevis, Alyson Cason, Tara Barnes, Rebecca Cason and Steven Barnes; and three great-grandchildren. The family of Mr. Howard Barnes will have a private family graveside service at the Elliottsville Cemetery in Alabaster.
