Briarwood loses in overtime of state soccer playoff game

HUNTSVILLE — After playing Athens to a tough 0-0 tie during regulation, the Briarwood girls soccer team lost in its state soccer semifinal after Athens finally broke the tie after 42 seconds of overtime for a 1-0 win.

Briarwood outshot Athens 19-8, including 10 shots on goal. Sara Smeltzer led Briarwood with eight shots, while goalie Sarah Drew Mulvaney had three saves.
