FROM STAFF REPORTS

Former Pelham baseball standout Austin Dubberly, earned the University of Montevallo Athleltic Department’s John Bennett Walters Award as the top male scholar-athlete during the 2012-2013 season.

Dubberly, a Helena native, ended his career at Montevallo with a 3.677 cumulative grade-point average and graduated this spring with a degree in Business Management. He was named to the Peach Belt Conference All-Academic team following both his junior and senior seasons, and has been named to the conference’s Presidential Honor Roll multiple times in his career.

Dubberly helped the Falcons reach their first Peach Belt Conference tournament championship game during his senior season, which included the program’s first win over the top-ranked team in the nation. He finished his career with a season that will left him near the top of the school record book after recording 18 sacrifice bunts, just four shy of tying the Falcons’ previous record for sacrifice bunts in a single season. His mark, which ranks him No. 5 nationally in NCAA Division II in the category this season, puts him second in the category in school history.

Dubberly finished his career with his name at the top of the Montevallo baseball record book in a defensive category. His 613 assists places him at the top of the record book after he broke the previous school-record mark of 521 career assists set by B.J. Holloway.

He was a four-year member of the baseball team, and was also the department’s male Sportsmanship Award recipient.
