Alabama FC began their inaugural season in the Women’s Premier Soccer League with a 3-1 win over Mississippi Fuego at Sports Blast in North Shelby County.

Alabama FC opened up the scoring after only three minutes when Katie Compton beat her defender out wide and played a ball into the path of Dee Makis to finish off the play with a strike into the roof of the net.

Before the half, Mississippi tied the game at one-all when Lisa Mann collected a loose ball from about 30 yards out and turned and produced a high shot that would beat Alabama FC goalkeeper Rachel Ames.

Alabama FC started the second half strong and were rewarded for their efforts when Katie Compton finished off her strong run with a shot that hit the top corner.

Haley Gerken finished off the scoring with a low shot that beat the goalkeeper at the back post.

The team, which features several players with connections to Shelby County, will have their next home game June 7 at Sports Blast.
