NORTH SHELBY — All westbound lanes of U.S. 280 in the area of Target are currently closed after an elderly couple died in an accident involving a semi-truck and a car.

The accident occurred at about 12:15 p.m. Sept. 9 at the intersection of Cahaba Park Circle.

The victims’ names have not yet been released. The two were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Birmingham Police Department.

“It is expected that most or all of the lanes will be closed for an extended amount of time,” according to a Shelby County Sheriff’s Office press release.

All westbound motorists attempting to travel into Birmingham should consider exiting U.S. 280 at Cahaba Valley Road or Valleydale Road to access Interstate 65 North. Eastbound motorists should also consider alternate routes, according to the press release.
