FROM STAFF REPORTS

MORROW, Ga. – The Montevallo women’s soccer team played for the second time in three days on Sept. 7. A hard fought game with the Wingate University Bulldogs ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Falcons were the first ones on the board, but they didn’t do it in a conventional manner. The Bulldogs put the ball into their own net for the own goal and put themselves in a 1-0 hole. This score would hold up for the rest of the first half.

The second half had more offense than the first. Chandler Murphy came out firing for the Bulldogs, and at 58:56, she was able to race past the defense and put one into the back of the net to tie the game.

Wingate would not be done scoring. Murphy again found herself in a scoring role, but on Wingate’s second goal, she would record the assist. She was able to find Meaghan Barry on the cross and this goal left Montevallo facing a 2-1 deficit.

With less than five minutes remaining, the Falcons were scrambling to put a goal on the board. In Montevallo’s time of need, their preseason Peach Belt All-Conference player, Jade Pennock, stepped up. She tied the game up at 85:57, and the game would go to overtime.

In overtime, neither team was able to put anything else on the board, ending the game 2-2.

This was Wingate’s second draw in as many games. Montevallo is now 0-1-1 on the year.

The Falcons will next take the field on Sept. 13. This will be the first home match of the year for the women’s soccer team. They will face West Alabama at 7 p.m.
