ALABASTER – A subdivision slightly southeast of Alabaster’s city limits could be annexed into the city in the next few weeks, as the City Council is set to hold a public hearing on the matter during an early August meeting.

During its Aug. 10 meeting, the City Council will hold a public hearing on annexing about 10 houses around Fogle Lake, which is slightly east of the Saddle Lake Farms subdivision off Shelby County 339.

The council also will hold a public hearing during its Aug. 10 meeting on annexing a piece of property between the Fogle Lake subdivision and the Saddle Lake Farms subdivision. If the connecting piece of land is annexed, it will make the Fogle Lake subdivision contiguous to Alabaster’s current city limits, meaning the City Council can vote to annex Fogle Lake without requiring an act of the Alabama Legislature.

Council members likely will vote on the two annexation requests during the Aug. 10 meeting.

If the annexations are approved, which will be a few days before the 2015-2016 school year begins, children in the homes will be able to continue attending schools in the Alabaster City Schools system.

Through a separation agreement between the Shelby County School System and the Alabaster City School System, students zoned for Alabaster schools who do not live in the city limits are being phased out of Alabaster schools over the next few years.

If the annexations are not approved, some children in the neighborhood will no longer be able to attend the city’s schools.

The City Council has been discussing the possible annexation for the past several weeks, and met with residents in the neighborhood during a recent work session to discuss the matter.

The Aug. 10 meeting is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Alabaster City Hall at 1953 Municipal Way.
