CALERA— The Calera City Council recognized the Field of Angels, a nonprofit baseball league for children and adults with special needs, at its Oct. 19 meeting.

Council member Alan Watts said he and the Council wanted to recognize the organization for all they do for Calera and other surrounding communities.

“It’s just a good thing they do for challenged children and adults that otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience organized baseball,” Watts said.

Watts said he has volunteered for the Field of Angels for the last couple years through his platform as a council member, and he wanted to make sure they were acknowledged.

At the meeting Watts stood and thanked the board for their help in making the recognition possible and thanked the Field of Angels for their work. The Calera Mayor and the other City Council members mirrored his gratitude.

“If you have never had the pleasure of seeing a Field of Angles game, I invite you to come out to Eagle Sports Complex in Calera next year during the season to witness it,” Watts said at the meeting. “When you see the joy and excitement on the players faces who are actually participating in a baseball game by batting the ball and running the bases, it is priceless. Each hit is a home run and so is the Field of Angels organization.”

Chris Bunn, the president of the Field of Angels, was present at the meeting to accept the recognition of the council. He said the organization has been running for six years and it just continues to grow.

“It means a lot,” he said. “The city has donated a lot of resources to make this successful. It means a lot to be recognized by the City Council.  I know that our community is behind us and they show that by their support.”

Seeing everyone come together for the Field of Angels meant a lot, Bunn said. The Field of Angels Baseball League is one event that ties even the young and old together.

“It’s nice to hear everybody talk about making a difference and bringing the community together,” Bunn said.
