NORTH SHELBY—Spring is around the corner, and with it warmer weather, longer days and the second annual Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church community field day.

Although it has all the fun of a traditional field day, the OMPC field day is anything but average. From 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on April 24, the church’s activity field will be filled with inflatables for children, food trucks, an obstacle course and games.

“There’s going to be a ton of different (activities),” Jonathan McKinney, a member of OMPC, said.

Those looking for some fun competition can join a team for a volleyball or kickball game. People of all ages can also put their skills to the test in a variety of relay races, tug-of-war and a dance competition.

Attendees are invited to bring lawn chairs and a picnic or enjoy food from Saw’s BBQ, Dos Hermanos and Steel City Pops food trucks.

The OMPC field day is free and open to everyone in the community.

“It’s not just for (OMPC members),” McKinney said. “We really want it to be for…anyone within driving distance of where we are.”

Last year’s event saw between 700-1,000 attendees, and this year, McKinney said he expects the number to rise “well over 1,000.”

Putting the field day together takes months of planning and help from more than 50 volunteers. This year, planners wanted to make sure everyone could join in on the fun and competition, even adults.

“We’re going to try and take a lot of steps so we have more adults participating than last year,” McKinney said, noting fun and games are for everyone.

The OMPC field day isn’t just an evening of fun, it’s also a great way to bring the community together, McKinney said.

“Our big desire here is for people in the community here to get together and enjoy each other,” McKinney said, adding he hopes the event will become “something people look forward to doing every year.”

The OMPC field day is free and open to everyone. The event will begin at the church, located at 5080 Cahaba Valley Trace, at 5 p.m., games will kick off at 5:30 p.m.
