HOOVER – The Spain Park Lady Jaguars overcame an early deficit to rally for a win against the visiting Madison Academy Mustangs Friday night at home.

The Mustangs started off on a 6-2 run, led by their fast-paced defense. However, as the Jaguars defense took control and forced turnovers, the offense went on a 16-3 run to give Spain Park an 18-9 lead midway through the second quarter.

Madison Academy, led by Meri Wheeler and Dejon Fletcher, led the Mustangs back, slowing down the offense to create more effective shots. The Mustangs went on a 12-0 lead right before the break to reclaim the lead at 21-18. Madison Academy relied on their tough defense and speed, but the Jaguars were able to answer with turnovers and speed of their own.

Spain Park forced several turnovers in the second half and used a strong three-point shooting effort from Claire Holt and Maggie Baldwin to pull away in the second half. The Mustangs were held scoreless until six minutes into the third quarter. The visitors were unable to find consistent production from their offense in the second half.

The Jaguars outrebounded the Mustangs in the fourth quarter, and made four out of their five free throws to seal the 45-32 win. Holt led the Jaguars with 18 points, while Baldwin added 11 points and three rebounds, as well as one steal.

Spain Park has one more road game at Vestavia Hills next week, and will then prepare for postseason play. The Jaguars improved their overall season record to 17-11.
