PELHAM— This spring break, the skate school at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena is looking to get kids out on the rink with its Star Wars themed camp.

The three-day camp is March 29-31 and will teach kids 5 to 12 years old how to skate or how to play hockey. Each day, the kids will arrive at 8 a.m. and participate in skate time, off-ice workouts and arts and crafts.

“They have a want to learn to ice skate or they want to play hockey, and then this just makes it a twist and makes it a little more fun,” said Craig Henderson, director of skating.

He said the kids will get six total hours of skating time, learning skills such as one foot glides, backwards skating and stopping. The hockey players will learn to play through mini games with real pucks and sticks.

Henderson said he hopes to have between 20 and 30 students participate in the spring break camp. Those students can also enjoy Star Wars themed crafts and decorations.

“We kind of do a little bit of a theme every camp we do,” Henderson said. “They have a ball.”

He said he got the idea to use Star Wars after seeing how popular it is right now.

After the group lesson, Henderson said the kids break for snacks and crafts before heading back out to the ice. The lessons encompass Basic I and II classes or Hockey I and II, depending on which route the student chooses.

This is only the second spring break camp Henderson has hosted, so it’s a fairly new concept at the Ice Arena. He said he started the camp for those people who stay in town for the week and want something productive to do.

The camp costs $150 and participants must register in advance by calling the Pro Shop at 620-6448 ext.261.  For more information, visit Pelhamciviccomplex.com.
