Okay.

There are a lot of moving parts right now with basketball, as far as who is playing who and where they’re playing and when. There are 11 teams still alive at the moment, seven boys and four girls, and keeping up with what’s going on can be a headache. Let’s take a quick look, for everyone’s sanity, at each basketball team still alive, and what the next week looks like for each.

Boys

Vincent

Vincent won the 2A Area 9 title, and will host its sub-regional game with Asbury on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Class 2A Area 9 is designated for the Northeast regional tournament, and should the Yellow Jackets beat Asbury, they will play either Ranburne or Section on Friday at 3 p.m. at Jacksonville State. A win in that game puts Vincent in the Northeast regional final on Feb. 23 at 5:45 p.m. for a berth in the 2A Final Four, which would be Vincent’s second-straight trip to the Final Four.

Montevallo

Montevallo won the 4A Area 7 tournament, and will host its sub-regional game against Holt on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Class 4A Area 9 is designated for the Central regional tournament, which is being played at Alabama State in Montgomery. Should the Bulldogs beat Holt, they will play either Handley or Elmore County on Feb. 23 at 1:30 p.m. If Montevallo wins that game, the Bulldogs will play at 2:15 on Feb. 25 for a berth in the 4A Final Four.

Helena

After finishing the regular season undefeated in area play, the Huskies lost the 5A Area 7 tournament final to Central Tuscaloosa by a point on Feb. 13. This means Helena will now travel to play Sylacauga in the sub-regional round on Tuesday, where tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Class 5A Area 7 is designated for the Central regional tournament and, like Montevallo, all regional games will be at Alabama State. Should Helena beat Sylacauga, the Huskies will play either B.T. Washington or Wilcox Central on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. If Helena wins that, the Huskies will play on Feb. 25 at 10:45 a.m. for a berth in the 5A Final Four.

Chelsea

For the second time in as many years, Chelsea won the 6A Area 10 tournament. This means Chelsea will host Fort Payne on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the 6A sub-regional round. Class 6A Area 10 is designated for the Northeast regional tournament, and all games will be played Jacksonville State along with Vincent. Should Chelsea beat Fort Payne, the Hornets will play either Woodlawn or Center Point on Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m. Woodlawn was also the team that knocked Chelsea out of the 6A Sweet Sixteen last year, and the possibility is alive and well the two will meet again. If Chelsea wins that, it will play at 5:45 p.m. on Feb. 24 for a berth in the 6A Final Four

Pelham

The Panthers lost the 6A Area 9 championship to Homewood, and will travel to play Opelika in the 6A sub-regional round on Tuesday, and tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Class 6A Area 9 is designated for the Central regional tournament, and, like Helena and Montevallo, will play all its regional games at Alabama State. Should Pelham beat Opelika on Tuesday, the Panthers will play either Bessemer City or Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa on Feb. 18 at 1:30 p.m. If Pelham wins that game, it will play on Feb. 24 at 10:45 a.m. for a berth in the 6A Final Four.

Oak Mountain

7A does not have a sub-regional round, due to the fact there are far less 7A schools than any other classification. Therefore, the 7A Area 5 tournament champion Oak Mountain Eagles are guaranteed a spot in its regional tournament. Class 7A Area 5 is designated for the Northwest regional tournament, and all Northwest regional games will be played at Wallace State. Oak Mountain is playing Sparkman on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Should the Eagles win that game, they will play either Hoover or James Clemens on Feb. 23 for a berth in the 7A Final Four.

Spain Park

Spain Park and Oak Mountain are, geographically, the two closest schools in the county. However, the 7A Area 6 winner will play its regional games roughly two hours away from Oak Mountain. Class 7A Area 6 is designated for the Northeast region, and, like Chelsea, will play its regional games at Jacksonville State. The Jaguar will play Grissom on Feb. 18 at 1:30 p.m. Should Spain Park win that, the Jaguars will play either Mountain Brook or Gadsden City on Feb. 23 for a berth in the 7A Final Four.

Girls

Vincent

The Lady Yellow Jackets lost to Thorsby in the 2A Area 9 championship, and are traveling to Asbury tonight to play in the 2A sub-regional round. If Vincent gets past Asbury, the Lady Yellow Jackets will travel to Jacksonville State to join the Vincent boys at the Northeast regional. Vincent will play either Collinsville or Randolph County at 3 p.m. on Feb. 19. Should the Lady Yellow Jackets win that game, they will play at 4 p.m. on Feb. 23 for a berth in the 2A Final Four.

Montevallo

Like the boys, the Montevallo Lady Bulldogs won the 4A Area 7 championship easily. As a result, Montevallo is hosting Bibb County tonight at 7 p.m. in the 4A sub-regional round. Should Montevallo win, it will join the boys’ team at Alabama State. Montevallo will play either Handley or Elmore County on Feb. 23 at noon. If the Lady Bulldogs win that game, they will play at 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 for a berth in the 4A Final Four.

Helena

The Lady Huskies lost the 5A Area 7 final to Central Tuscaloosa by three points. As a result, Helena is travelling to play Talladega in the 5A sub-regional round tonight at 7 p.m. Should the Lady Huskies beat Talladega, they will head to Alabama State for the Central regional tournament. Helena will play either Wilcox Central or B.T. Washington on Feb. 20 at 9 a.m. If Helena wins that, it will play at 9 a.m. on Feb. 25 for a berth in the 5A Final Four.

Thompson

The Lady Warriors lost to Hoover in the 7A Area 5 championship, and as a result will play Hazel Green at 9 a.m. on Feb. 19 at Wallace State. Hazel Green knocked off the Lady Warriors last year as a result of a last-second shot. Should Thompson knock off Hazel Green this year, it will play either Bob Jones or Hoover on Feb. 23 at 12:30 p.m. for a berth in the 7A Final Four.
