CALERA— One church in Calera is hosting an egg hunt with a glow-in-the-dark twist this Easter season. Residents are invited to the newly established Lakehills Church for an indoor, glow-in-the-dark egg hunt March 26 at 7 p.m.

“We just want to reach out to the community,” said Pastor Josh Howell. “(To) just do something fun for the kids in the community, because kids really are important and it’s a point of emphasis for Lakehills.”

Howell said he and his wife first got the glow-in-the-dark idea from another church that held flashlight egg hunts. He said his children weren’t quite old enough to participate in it.

“(We asked:) ‘What’s something safe and fun for that age that would be a little different for them?’” Howell said. “We had that idea and God just developed it.”

They’ve hosted glow-in-the-dark hunts before, and Howell said the kids enjoy using glow-in-the-dark bracelets and that it’s a different kind of event. The first year, the event was so popular, Howell said they ran out of everything.

Lakehills’ event will take place in the dugout area of the NXS Gym in Calera and will likely last until 8 p.m. Every kid will be given a glow-in-the-dark necklace, and Howell said there will also be prizes and candy.

Because the Easter egg hunt will take place indoors, Howell said it is a fun and safe environment, so parents can feel comfortable having their kids attend.

“It’s important to us to be able to let the community know we are here,” Howell said. “It’s not just about service on Sundays. We want to be involved in the community all through the week.”

Admission is free, but everyone who plans to attend needs to reserve a space, adults included. If there is enough interest, Howell said they might open up another time slot on Friday, March 25 at 7 p.m.
