COLUMBIANA – Students at Shelby County High and Columbiana Middle schools are teaming up to present a multi-faceted choral concert March 17-18.

Nearly 50 students will perform in “Let’s Go to the Movies,” a production comprised of music from hit movies such as “Les Misérables,” “Grease,” “Annie,” “Mary Poppins,” “Pitch Perfect,” “High School Musical” and more.

“The concert features numerous soloists (as) well as large group performances,” SCHS Choral Director Ashlyn Kuyrkendall said. “We have tap dancers, a lyrical dance solo and full choir movement as well. It’s a fast-paced and entertaining show that displays the wide range of talent at SCHS.”

The CMS choirs joining SCHS for the show are the seventh and eighth grade mixed choir and a small ladies ensemble consisting of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students performing “It’s a Hard Knock Life” from “Annie.”

“This is the first time SCHS has performed a show such as this,” Kuyrkendall said. “I announced it to the students in November, and we began preparations the day after our winter concert in December.”

The SCHS choral department consists of students in ninth through 12th grades in concert choir or show choir.

“This show is the result of tremendous hard work from our students and full support of our administration, for which I am beyond grateful,” Kuyrkendall said. “I wanted to do this show because I knew our students would love it, both from the performing side and audience perspective. Students are having a fantastic time preparing this show. No matter the age, there will be music everyone can enjoy.”

Performances of “Let’s Go to the Movies” will be held March 17 and March 18 at 7 p.m. at the SCHS auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.

The department’s next concert, a spring choral concert, will be held May 10 at 7 p.m. at the SCHS auditorium. The event will be free and open to the public.
