Helena softball takes down county opponents

HELENA–In recent weeks, the Helena Lady Huskies softball team has started gaining some momentum by defeating four county teams over their last six games, defeating Pelham twice as well as Calera and Thompson.

Helena 2 – Pelham 1

The Lady Huskies came away with a hard fought win on March 10, against the Pelham Lady Panthers, as two runs pushed across the plate were enough to preserve the victory.

Helena’s Reagan Curtis went 2-3 from the plate after doubling in the third inning and hitting a single in the fifth to finish with one run and one RBI in the game.

Lady Huskies pitcher Kate Lively got the win on the mound after allowing just one run over four innings pitched. Lively struck out three while giving up four hits.

Helena’s Mackenzie Wilson hit an RBI single in the third inning to put the Lady Huskies up for good 2-1.

Helena 7 – Calera 5

In a March 15, matchup against county opponent Calera, it was Helena’s Maggie Blanton who got hot at the plate to help give the Lady Huskies a 7-5 win.

Blanton finished 3-3 after recording three singles in the game. Blanton also collected two RBIs to lead Helena.

As a team Helena pounded out 13 hits in the game and jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first inning.

The Lady Eagles would not go down quietly as a three-run third inning helped tie the game 5-5.

Blanton singled in the bottom of the fifth and the bottom of the seventh innings to score Kate Lively both times to regain the lead for the Lady Huskies 7-5.

Helena pitcher Avery Barnett struck out four over four shutout innings to get the win on the mound.

Helena 8 – Pelham 1

In the coming years, Helena and Pelham will see each other a lot across all sports once Helena moves up to Class 6A.

In this matchup, the Lady Huskies got the best of Pelham in an 8-1 victory that saw Helena crank out 12 hits in the game.

Helena’s Laney Bruner went 3-3 at the plate, collecting three singles and an RBI.

Four other Lady Huskies finished with multiple hits in the game including Jordan Ingram, Reagan Curtis, Kate Lively and Mackenzie Wilson who all finished with two hits apiece.

Helena’s Avery Barnett pitched a complete game that included no earned runs and six strikeouts.

Helena 11 – Thompson 1

In a matchup against 7A opponent Thompson, Helena’s bats were sizzling on March 22, as the Lady Huskies pounded out a whopping 18 hits to easily defeat the Lady Warriors, 11-1.

The bulk of the runs came in the sixth inning as Helena scored five runs on a two-run single by Maggie Blanton, a two-run single by Blanton, an RBI double by Avery Barnett, an RBI single by Chaney Handley and an RBI single by Brookanne Anderson.

Helena’s Avery Barnett finished with another solid pitching performance after striking out six batters over six innings pitched.
