Carlye Best, a long time resident of Montevallo, died at home Saturday, April 9 at the age of 84.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Best, Jr., and son, Howard Best, III.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Judith Best Haley (Dave); nephew, Daniel Haley; and nieces, Heather Jamison and Heidi Haley.

Throughout her 29-year University of Montevallo career, Carlye’s expertise and wisdom relating to university events, policies and procedures as well as office management impacted the lives of countless faculty, staff, and students. Her career included 18 years in the president’s office as the Executive Assistant to several presidents. She also served as secretary to the Board of Trustees until 2008.

Carlye began her career at the University of Montevallo as the secretary of the department of social sciences, where she shared her life-long love of history and politics with faculty and students.

Carlye and her husband, Howard, were very active in the local, state, and national Republican Party. She enjoyed travel, bridge and book clubs, which fostered wonderful, life-long friendships. She will be missed by her many friends.

A celebration of Carlye’s life will be at St. Andrews’s Episcopal Church in Montevallo on Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m. The University of Montevallo will host a reception for family and friends in the church social hall in honor of Carlye’s contributions to the University following the service.

Memorials may be given to the University of Montevallo History program or the Ted Metz Art Scholarship (University Advancement, University of Montevallo, Station 6215, Montevallo, Alabama 35115) or the Jimmy Hale Mission (P.O. Box 10472, Birmingham, AL  35202).

Burial was at Pine Crest cemetery in Mobile, Alabama on Saturday, April 16.
