UM volleyball pulls first-round upset

The University of Montevallo women’s volleyball team (21-17) stunned Gulf South West Division No. 1 seed Arkansas Tech University (31-5), 3-1 at the Gulf South Conference Tournament. The Golden Suns had only lost four matches coming into the contest. The Falcons jumped out to an early lead winning set one, 25-21. Tech rebounded with a 25-17 victory, but the Falcons went on to win the last two sets 25-18 and 25-11.

The Falcons were led by junior Katy Handrick who had 15 kills and eight digs. Senior Lauren Tortorici came one kill away from a double-double with nine kills and 12 digs.

Freshman Anna Garrison and junior Joy Peschman split time at setter picking up 15 and 13 assists, respectively. Senior Monika Tortorici had eight kills and a solo block.

The Falcons had a .234 attack percentage and held Arkansas Tech to just .171.

The Falcons had 10 service aces as sophomore Kara Zawisza picked up four. She also tied for the team lead in digs with 12.

The win marks the first GSC victory for Montevallo since Nov. 14, 2003 against the University of Central Arkansas.

The Falcons dominated most of the match giving up the lead just three times throughout the contest.

The Falcons will now take on East Division second-seed the University of North Alabama on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Falcons were swept in both contests against UNA during the regular season
