AHSAA events to resume Tuesday
Published Thursday, April 30, 2009
The Alabama High School Athletic Association has announced it will resume play on Tuesday for spring sports playoffs. All athletic events were canceled Thursday through Monday after three school systems in North Alabama closed due to possible swine flu cases in the schools.
"I hope and pray no more cases pop up anywhere else and no more school systems shut down," said Ron Ingram, director of communications for the AHSAA. "We had to make a choice. This inconvenience, even though it seems alarming, is no different than rain coming into a spring sports schedule like it has many times in the past ... our rules say you play the next available day."
Ingram said the AHSAA will evaluate everything again on Monday, but as for now games will resume Tuesday.
If play resumes Tuesday, then area softball tournaments and golf sectionals will pick up, along with the second round of the state soccer tournament and baseball quarterfinals. The state track meets, originally scheduled for May 1-2 in Troy and Gulf Shores will be moved to a three-day, one-site event in Gulf Shores May 7-9. The Class 1A-3A meet will run May 7-8, while the Class 4A-6A meet will be May 8-9. The rest of the state tournaments schedules will remain as scheduled, according to Ingram.
An updated schedule of Tuesday's games for Shelby County schools will be updated later today.
