In Your Neighborhood: Shelby County sex offenders

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has registered nine additional sex offenders over the course of a year.
Sgt. Mark Bishop said the county is home to 193 offenders who are required to provide the state with their home address. That’s up from 184 offenders last year, and 160 offenders in 2007.

Each dot represents the address of a registered sex offender in Shelby County.
“There’s been a slight increase, but the number is always in flux,” Bishop said. “It always varies depending on court convictions and the number of offenders moving from county to county.”
The sheriff’s office, along with local police departments and the U.S. Marshals’ Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, are responsible for checking in on the county’s offenders every three months, confirming they are in compliance with the law. However, Bishop said citizens can keep tabs on offenders too.
By logging on to the sheriff’s office Web site, shelbyso.com, citizens can access the county’s offender registry by clicking on the “Sex Offenders” and “View Registry” links.
Citizens can also view offenders on the recently launched Web site, myshelbyso.com. Click on “Shelby County Crime Statistics” link and click on “Crime Statistics.” Type in an address in the search bar at the top of page, and check the box marked “Show Sex Offenders.”
PUBLIC NOTIFICATION
State law obligates the sheriff’s office to mail out flyers whenever an offender moves within a 1,000-foot radius of a neighborhood. Of the 193 offenders in Shelby County, 113 are subject to community notification. Bishop explained why an offender is excluded from community notification. The reasons include:
➢The offender is a minor.
➢The offender lived at a residence before the Community Notification Act became law.
➢The offender committed a misdemeanor, such as indecent exposure or sexual misconduct.
Current law prohibits offenders convicted of child sex crimes from living within 2,000 feet of a day care, foster home or K-12 school. Gov. Bob Riley signed a bill in May prohibiting offenders from living within 2,000 feet of a college or university. The bill, which became effective Aug. 1, also prohibits offenders from loitering near school bus stops and within 500 yards of colleges and universities.
BE WATCHFUL
Bishop said the new bill, paired with previous provisions, aims to keep communities safe. He urges citizens to be watchful of neighborhood activity and to visit the sheriff’s Web sites to monitor offenders who live nearby.
“If you witness any suspicious or odd activity, call the sheriff’s department or your local police department so we can follow up and investigate,” Bishop said.

Every place has registrants, but the truth is you'll be far more likely to be s*xually assaulted by someone you already know rather than by someone on that list, most of whom never reoffend. Truth @ www.oncefallen.com

Over a 25 year period child molesters have recidivism rate of 52%.

In just read this, and didn't realize that minors were excluded. In my opinion, if they are convicted, so what??? They are obviously sexually deviant, and if they have done something to deserve to be a "sexual offender" they are apparently dangerous, therefore should be on the list for all to see. My question is this....When they come of age can we see the perverts names??? Are we then notified??? I've got small children, what if they come stalking around my kids?
