Cindy Hawkins, director of Kids First Awareness Coalition Learning Center, invites the public to "A Day of Community Service" July 18 from 9 a.m.-noon to celebrate the center's seventh birthday.

Service projects include cleaning and painting the Kids First building located in the Valley public housing complex on Mt. Olive Road in Alabaster. Volunteers are also needed for fence repairs and building a shed to protect Kids First’s vehicles.

A community prayer and free lunch with birthday cake will conclude the day.

Hawkins said community service is the perfect avenue to celebrate the seven-year milestone.

“We know people don’t have a lot of money right now, but they got a hammer and a wheelbarrow,” Hawkins said. “This celebration is all about the community and all about the kids. We’re trying to unite the community together.”

Hawkins opened Kids First July 20, 2002 to provide youth a safe place to learn and play. The non-profit organization offers after-school, summer enrichment and community outreach programs at no cost.
