Shelby Academy members vote to remain open
Published Tuesday, July 14, 2009
MONTEVALLO Shelby Academy members voted 52-10 at a special called meeting Tuesday night to keep their school alive for one last try.
It won’t be easy, though. The school is currently $576,000 in debt, and no one knows exactly how much money the school needs to reopen in August.
“You can do the pep talk, that’s fine, but if the members of the school want to save this institution, it’s going to take some hard work from everyone,” said school attorney Mitchell Spears during the meeting.

The "no" votes far outnumbered the "yes" votes, 52-10, when it came to deciding whether to close the school.
Approximately 225 people attended the meeting, which was acrimonious at times, with several people calling out the Board of Trustees for keeping quiet about money matters.
“I think the board members should have had this meeting a long time ago,” said Esther Acre, a former faculty member. “I never in my wildest dreams imagined getting this far in debt.”
Board member and 1981 graduate Clifton Garrett fired back at the naysayers, saying he’s been trying his hardest to get in touch with alumni for months, finally using Facebook as the only way to get in touch with many.
“I have asked and asked and asked for mailing lists and phone numbers. I have done my best since January to get back with alumni,” he said. “Communication is the weak spot of Shelby Academy.”
Board member Gloria Haygood said it costs $65,000-$70,000 a month to cover the school’s operating expenses with 120 students — a dollar amount that would increase if enrollment increased. The school has a small reserve of about $2,200, but money needs to come rolling in soon for the school to survive, she said.
“We just have to go back to the drawing board,” she said.
Board member Bo Winslett will chair a building committee, which will explore ways to bring funding and students to the school. The committee will meet within the next few days.
Opening in August may take an act of God, however.
“It would take a miracle,” Spears said. “There appear to be enough members here interested in keeping this school open. If that fire continues to burn, maybe they can find a way out of this mess.”

How can you keep a school open when you are in debt?
Why make everyone get excited for something that might not can be saved? You'd have to raise tuition to get enough money to get by and with the economy like it is how is that going to be affordable for most people? And school starts in one month?
Come on, let's get real, I hate to see the school closed but reality is facing the grim news that sometimes things don't go the way we want in life but we just learn to let go and move on!

This is another embarassment to other private schools, how could a group of people be so unorganized? Let it die so the other kids who have aleady moved on can. I mean come on there are no teachers, most told them after the meeting they have already took other jobs, there are no students, no coaches for anything. Oh yeah we forgot to mention they need a million dollars to pay past dent, oh yeah and its going to take. 70 000 a month to run the school and all this must be taken care of by 2 weeks! I have never seen a group of people so ignorant in my life, stop punishing the kids and end this nonsense now!

look, its not feasible to open next year, but if the alumni and others really step up to help like they said they would, they can start getting funds to pay debts and possibly reopen the following year.
and 242424, like i said before, you obviously don't have the same emotional attachment that others do. I mean think about it, if the bank was repossessing your home and you were trying to struggle to get money to pay, how would you feel if i just said give it up you can't get the money let it die its over.
also, if you find Shelby to be such an "embarrassment" on many fronts, why do you seem to closely follow their articles?

I was just fixing to say the same thing nicholas3! We are all in tough economic times, not just the Academy & it takes people pulling together to make things work. We are a body & the body has many parts & they all need to function properly & work together so I believe that with some restructure the school can come back strong.
If you are so negative about what is going on maybe you just have some negatives in your life & you are throwing your frustrations out on a situation instead of facing reality for your own life, find the root to your problems & deal with those. I will pray that you find some positives in your life today & you can move on with joy. If you don't like what is happening at the Academy then don't be a part, it is not for you anyway, it is for people that have a love for it.

CALLING ALL ALUMNI!!!
Be at the Gathering on July 25th at 7:00pm! Come to the Fox & Hound Pub/Grill. Would love to see some of my old classmates and those that were in school with me!
The Academy still has lots to offer, so for those of you who want to see it's funeral, may I suggest that you use your time more wisely and work to ACTUALLY accomplish something POSITIVE. If you can't do that, then call Rocko's and make your own arrangements!!! But leave the rest of us alone as we work to try to uplift the Academy!!!
ROLL SHELBY ROLL!
RAIDER FOR LIFE!!!!

Even so, it's never over 'till it's over. A donor, or donors / benefactors could surface. Or some of that good 'ol Obama stimulus money could surface. As the lawyer said, it would take a miracle, but miracles DO happen.
It would be one of the great, feel-good stories of the summer if the alumni group can stave off closure. Good luck. Seriously. All joking aside, it would be a great thing to see this pulled off.

It's probably over for now. God does work miracles, when He wants to and when people deserve it. God could work a miracle here. People will really have to show a moving toward what God wants in order for this school to remain open and not what they want. It may be best to take off a year or two and re-group and create a plan that will provide security and longevity.
It was a mistake to get involved with an anonymous benefactor to keep the school open. Specifically Werner Beiersdoerfer and his entourage. (There are many different spellings to his name according to numerous court documents). I understand that most members of Shelby Academy did not know what kind of man he was when they agreed to take his money because they were desperate and were presented with a fix and didn't have time to discriminate or investigate the source of the money.
I'm really not sure why his name has been kept out of the press. It's not like he was helping a kid with cancer out of the kindness of his heart and didn't want applause. He was looking for a quick real estate deal because he was in a financial bind and needed an out.
I think Shelby Academy needs to get a new attorney! And if everyone comes together and prays to God and asks for God's will (which may include closing the Academy) they will be fine.
All that matters is the kids and their future. It's not about a place, It's about teaching children what's right and wrong. It's about producing contributing members of society that will spread the word of Jesus Christ. Until Shelby gets back to the core of why we are here, I can't see it being saved.
I think Shelby Academy is a great school. I will send my children back if the school has a plan and is God fearing. If not, I won't.
None of the other private schools are any better by the way. You all have your issues.
Don't judge. How you judge others will be how you are judged. Careful.

Listen Nicholas, until you are one of these teachers who is not getting paid and your mortgage is behind bc of this place or you can't feed your family or üntil you are one of these confused kids who play football and this schoo has given you your transcript and said "this school is closed" and go register somewhere else and pay you Fees and sign a contract and start working out withb your new teammates and this bunch of ignorant people do this and say you can't have your records and you still have to pay from this old contract. So you see this is not only about this handful of people whose feelings are going to be hurt bc there old school is closed, life is full of upsets like that get over it people. Saying you cant raise 2 million in 2 weeks is not being negative its reality. Just remember there is a lot more that is being hurt by all this than the few of you whose feelings might get hurt by. closing.

1) I understand the teachers need their pay but they don't want the school to completely close either.
2) How is it that if I didn't play football i would be unaffected, or not near as affected?
3) Its interesting to see how people change their stories.
"Saying you cant raise 2 million in 2 weeks is not being negative its reality."
Not it wouldn't, but lets take a quick look at the comments you have posted.
"This is another embarassment to other private schools, "
"Anyone who votes no to not close is a complete and total idiot!!!!!"
Are those not being negative? I find them negative.

How do you get that far in debt??? Seriously??? Maybe we should be looking into that part of it instead of calling out a man that stepped forward to help. Keep in mind that Mr. Beiersdoerfer put in own kids in that school. He's been a part of that school for years!!!!!!!! TRUTHBETOLD Mr. B is an upstanding man who does a lot of good things for his community... try googling his name again and you might find that article that this newspaper did not too long ago about building homes for families in need.
I, myself, am an Alumni but its not up to ME to save the school or any other alumni for that matter. They needed to have board members in place to keep this from happening in the first place... or at least to step forward sooner to try and get a handle on the financial matters. This debt didn't occur in matter of weeks and its not going to go away in a matter of weeks. Half a million in the whole and need $70,000 a month to move forward lets be realistic folks! I hate to see the school close but they dug themselves in this hole and they need to stop placing the blame on everything and everyone else!

nicholas3 - RIGHT ON!!! It takes a positive attitude to get the job done - ANY job!
242424 - I certainly hope you are not a teacher at the school from which I graduated. However, if you are, let's hope you don't teach English, Spelling or Grammar. If you are representing the school in any way, size, shape or form, you should pay close attention to what you type/write or you could be one of the people helping to be an embarrassment to this private school.
liz - I'll be at the Fox & Hound 7/25/09 7:00 pm - wouldn't miss it for the world! I'll also encourage more people to do so!!
There are some outstanding people and families still involved in this school and this situation. With their help, our unwaivering faith and, by the Grace of God, this CAN work!

I'm not angry, so please don't read this as if I am.
I'm curious, though, as to what people think they know about Werner Beiersdoerfer. This isn't the first comment I've read bashing him and I'm always amazed how quickly people are to condemn someone who has been asked to help and actually steps up to do so.
It seems people think he saw a school about to close and jumped forward to profit when they finally do. Someone came to him and asked for help and he said he would. Had he not, the school would have closed back in March or April and those seniors would have spent their last couple months at another school. That's how bad off the school was and is.
I'm truly not sure what rumors are being told, but I'm sure there are a lot - there are bound to be anytime a school goes to one man for help staying open. The fact that he's unable (not unwilling, but unable) to continue giving the school money to stay open isn't through any fault of his own, I assure you.
I'd love for the school to stay open and pray God provides a way for that to happen. For anyone who doesn't know, every Monday at 9:00pm is the time the Alumni has set for those who want and care to to pray for the school. If you're interested, set your alarm on your phone and pray with us.
Please though, out of Love and respect for the God we praise and serve, don't judge a man without knowing all the facts and then quote scripture about not judging.

toomuchgreen, I have often wondered who was in charge of the Academy's website too! I don't think it has been updated in awhile. Last time I looked the Board of Directors was wrong too. And I sent in an email months ago that has not been answered either!

just goes to show that SA is very unorganized and maybe closing down isn't all that bad after all

Facts:
1. The board did know there was money issues 3 years back, this was told by Mr. Z after he read the minutes from previous meetings.
2. The school board had another offer from a church and turned it down back in Feb because they did not want to have the church control the board.
3. Mr. B was nice enough to help the school to help the seniors and students finish the 08 and 09 school year and he should be thanked for that!
4. The school was still offering and giving scholarships for sports even thou they had money issues...how many students enrolled are paying including board member children? Special Parents did not pay for fees or tuition because they so called were helping out. If the school was in trouble why benefit from it..why not pay...if you don't want to pay go to public schools.
5. New plan but the same ol board....couldn't do it the first time why should you think they can do it the second time around?
6. Doors can open, but can they stay that way? all they need is 600,000 to pay old debt and 200,000 to get started...Alumni’s come and go...they will be gone again...
6. Coaches and Teachers are not returning....will there be quality teaching you pay for better education not what you can get in public....
7. Stuck in 2A for football. The teams that SA will be going up against will be ready and larger it will be an embarrassment to the kids at SA and you take a risk of getting them hurt. What coach would want that responsibility?
8. Collecting donation…are these donators going to keep donating and let the school drain their funds? It is a bad investment..oh they could ask for a bail out!
9. Putting a building…..a material item before a child’s education and well being is not God’s way…God’s way is to do what is in the best interest for the child not yourself because you are an Alumni.
10. The parents that built the school….really build the school…and everyone paid their fees back then….today is not about building a building because the building is there…this is about money and debt the parents that built the school were smart enough to know how to budget money and the school was built truly to be a private school not to recruit for sports and get free schooling.

I stand by what I said. It was an opinion, not a judgment. I agree with PRIDE. If I am wrong about Werner Beiersdoerfer, I will be the first to admit it and will eat my words humbly. I have been wrong in the past and will continue to be. This is a forum to express opinions and thoughts. The judgment comment was not a direct quote from scripture, it was a comment to people who are not members of Shelby that have opinions because they have animosity toward the school for whatever reason. I was pointing out that no one or place is perfect and everyone has issues, even me. Let me clarify, I believe Werner Beiersdoerfer lent money because he knew if the school couldn't pay it back, he would get the property. It was a business deal, not a favor. If it was a favor, it would have been a donation. Yes, I'm glad that the seniors got to graduate, a few of them are extremely close to me. But I don't think the thanks needs to go to Werner, I think the thanks needs to go to God and however he used people for his purpose.
Posted by speakingup (anonymous) on July 17, 2009 at 8:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)
TRUTHBETOLD: How did you come about forming these strong opinions on a man? I don't see Mr. B snatching the property out from under them??? NOPE instead he's stepping back and allowing the school to do all that they can to get things back together.... and EVEN if he were to get the property... he's entitled to it. For whatever reason you've got animosity against Mr B you need to let it go or else get your facts straight before you go on a public media outlet and bash a mans character. Let me remind you that this man has a family - kids and grandkids! He's a good man!
Doesn't make sense to me that they wouldn't want a church to control the school but they'd allow one single man.
SA has always been centered around football and its athelets.

Benefactor or no benefactor, board or no board, closing or not, There are quite a few students that will not be returning, mine included. I saw first hand the severe state of disorganization that the school was in the past year. I hate to see it close, but I made the decision to move my child before that was on the table. When a school is this bad off and so few of the students are returning, they wouldn't even generate enough revenue to pay the teachers' salaries, much less make any improvements by way of the curriculum or the dilapidated buildings. It's just a pipe dream. I highly doubt all these people that are popping up to "save the school" will still be there when these problems undoubtedly come up again, IF the school opens.
Posted by liz (anonymous) on July 17, 2009 at 10:21 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Let's stop all of the name calling and pointing of fingers. Mr. B has his own issues to deal with and his assets are frozen, so he has all that he can deal with now.
It boils down to this: Either you want to help Shelby Academy or not. Whether it is one person and dozen or one thousand that stand up for the Academy, it is going to take all of us rolling up our sleeves and putting in time, effort and monies to get the school back and running.
I, for one, will be one of those lending a hand, sweat, prayers and my pocketbook to help.
If you don't want to help, that's fine as well. Instead of slinging nasty comments and so, why not just wish us well?
Posted by PRIDE (anonymous) on July 17, 2009 at 10:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)
1. Why not do as other schools have in the past that had financial issues and close your high school and keep the lower grades open and rebuild from bottom up...and not make your students that are trying to get advance diplomas and scholarship for sports suffer?
2. Why keep the doors open only for sports and not for academics? The school is more worried about playing ball then the education they offer.
3. Parents that are current members are only looking for answers because they have a very important dissension to make for theirs child future...it is not the parent's future at state it is the child’s.
4. Best wishes and good luck, we will be missing the teacher because they were the best. I hope that we will one day see them at a school that will pay and treat them as an asset. We will not be returning as well as many other.

The alumni association will hold a meeting in the gym Tuesday, July 21st at 6:30pm to discuss the plans for the coming year. If you are a graduate, former student or friend of Shelby and want to participate, please make plans to attend. Please pass the word to those that are not on Facebook.

Because Liz, by doing this you are punishing the kids who are trying to improve themselves on move on to real schools. Please just do what's right and close it or at least let the AISA know you are not going to play sports before you get the school further in debt from the fines of 11 000 dollars.

I have read all of the comments posted regarding the school closing and come to the conclusion that the negative comments are from people that really dont care about the school. If you did, you would be more optimistic and obviously you have not been to any on the planning meetings as well because you dont have a CLUE of what is going on.
First of all the reason they are in debt is because of management of money. That has all changed. There will be new board members to replace the 6-8 that have resigned and there is new managment.
Plus the school survivied 40 years with no outside help expect the parents and students. Now we have an ORGANIZED Alumni association willing to step in and subsidize the school to the tune of several hundred thousand dollars a year. SO I suggest the negative comments just keep on keeping on.. Because Shelby WILL survive and will come out of this stronger, and better.
The Christian morals this school was built on are still there among the students, families, friends and alumni. That will never change. We are not saying its not going to be alot of work. But its work worth fighting for. I spent many years at Shelby Academy and graduated there. The faculty taught me so many valuable lessons in life that obviously the ones responding to this article could have used. We will come out a winner when all of this is over and will be better for it.

If these kid are forced to go back there will be 30 students in the whole school with no teachers because they won't pay them, and no new teachers will come in because they know the story which means unqualified teaches with all grades being taught in just a couple of rooms, all this just to prove a point. I will say it àgain that is not real school. I am also hearing there are a bunch of lawsuits against the school already filed.

I have received no calls, emails, regular mail, or info on the websites. If there is meeting info please share the following info for us all:
1. How many students do you have enrolled that is paying? How many are enrolled that don't have to pay or get a pay for one and get the other for free deal?
2. How many football players will you have for varsity? Not counting 7-9 graders.
3. How much money does the school have on hand today to pay the debts? How much do they have to open?
5. How many teachers will you have total? How many Coaches will you have total?
6. How many of the teachers in question 5 will be certified teachers or coaches?
7. Who will be the headmaster?
8. How was the new board created? I didn’t get to vote on new board member. All the years we have been there, we received a ballet in the mail.
9. Can you guarantee that the doors will stay open?
10. How will the school handle the lawsuits that are being filed when the doors opens?

Dear Liz,
A parent's concern has nothing to do with your quote "Either you want to help Shelby Academy or not". It has to do with what is right for a child's education. So you are saying that my child is to sit back and let their education suffer while you figure out how to save the school? So you would put your child's education on the line for a school? Remember high school students only have 4 years or less. They don't have time to wait for some parents to try and save a school it puts their education at risk. Question, Do you have a high school student at the school?

I completely understand the need to want to keep this school open, Most people do, but the facts are pretty clear and even the person that was keeping the books can figure this one out, it really doesn't matter what people want anymore, now it is a matter of having the money to do this. AND YOU DON'T HAVE IT. I know that they are telling you all that they can get the money here and there but if they could do that wouldn't it already be there???? That't what I thought. The thing is, that you all really need to quit being so selfish and think of the students for ONCE. LET THE SENIORS AT LEAST BE ABLE TO FINISH THERE HIGH SCHOOL YEARS OUT WITH SOME DIGNITY. If the school is kept open for a few weeks and then it closes during the school year then the students that are in sports CANNOT go play for someone else!!! THEIR SEASON WILL BE OVER!!!! BESIDES, THERE ARE NO COACHES!!!!! NO MONEY TO PAY COACHES OR TEACHERS.
NO MONEY........ NO SCHOOL... also, ROLL SHELBY REFERS TO SHELBY COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL, NOT SA.

2nd. Gizmo... you're killing me!! Christian morals??? LOL I graduated in 97. I can assure you that Christian morals were not a part of my education at that school. For a brief time (maybe a year or maybe it was just a semester) we had a bible class taught by one of the local pastors. This class wasn't even offered to everyone. Yes we said the Lord's prayers every morning but that hardly means the school had christian morals.... it was ran by Dewayne Kervin for crying out loud! The halls were filled with smoke and his main concern was his athelets. I always referred to school as the school who took in all the public school rejects! If you could play ball then you had no worries!
If its really about the kids then shut the doors and allow them to move on!

PRIDE
1. How many students do you have enrolled that is paying? everyone that goes there pays. if they are on financial aid the booster club or academic committe pays the rest
2. How many football players will you have for varsity? Varsity is considered 9-12 and there is close to 15 or 16 and they have been working out even with all this stuff and they are ready to surprise some people
3. How much money does the school have on hand today to pay the debts? How much do they have to open?
5. How many teachers will you have total? as many as we need to teach classes
How many Coaches will you have total? football basketball baseball softball and volleyball coaches
6. How many of the teachers in question 5 will be certified teachers or coaches?
7. Who will be the headmaster?
8. How was the new board created? I didn’t get to vote on new board member. All the years we have been there, we received a ballet in the mail.
obviously you dont go to the general meeting where you nominate a new board member and someone seconds it then you vote !!!
9. Can you guarantee that the doors will stay open? if the school opens it will make it through the year
10. How will the school handle the lawsuits that are being filed when the doors opens? if there are lawsuits someone might want to notify the school because there arent any

RaiderPride,
1. I did have a student there and I did pay my tuition for the 09-10 new school year.
How can you give financial aid when you don't have the money yourself? Oh yea, let the parents that pay pick up the tab...i think that is what got them in this issue to begin with…oh lets not call it a scholarship so the truth be told.....let’s blame it on the economy.
2. Not all 9th graders are ready for varsity in 2A. I know the list of football players and some of them have left so those numbers are wrong.
3. It is funny that I am not at all the meetings because they are kept a secret. They have my email and number to let me know when to show up.... but you are at all the meetings and can't answer the important questions.
4. Don't worry it takes time for a lawyer to get the paper work in order, and they are waiting to see what SA is going to do before they file.
5. Heard that they are not going to let parents get their child's transcripts...is this true? Heard the board was going to vote to let them have them or not. If you are in all the meetings you should have all the answers.

If they don't want to give you transcripts, get your own lawyer. That's ridiculous.

Transcripts have already been given out. the only people that possibly wouldn't have been able to get theirs are those who still owed money.

Nicholas3,
Not true, you can all week and no one will answer the phone. No one is at the school to give them out....I know about 6 people trying to get theirs and no one will communicate with them so they can get them. So there is a lot more students trying to leave and is on hold until someone shows up there to do the paper work. Give a date and time and we all will be there!
