ADPH: Lay Lake fish may not be safe

Published Wednesday, July 15, 2009

The Alabama Department of Public Health has issued new fish consumption advisories in Shelby County for largemouth bass and channel catfish due to mercury levels.

These advisories have been issued due to the possible exposure to mercury from eating fish caught in waterways across the state.

Largemouth bass caught in Lay Lake can be consumed once per month according to the ADPH, and channel catfish are considered to be fine to eat twice a month. Past advisories continue for striped bass out of Lay Lake, which should not be consumed due to the PCBs in them.

Paradise Point Marina owner Chris Horton said that he has not yet seen hesitation in those who eat the fish that they catch.

“A lot of the bass tournaments that we hold on the lake are catch and release, but other than that it is pretty much up to the individual,” Horton said.

Other advisories cover bodies of water in Barbour, Covington, Escambia, Greene and Russell counties.

The ADPH issues updated fish consumption advisories every year. The information used for this is based upon data collected by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management the preceding fall.
