White Rock fires back at EBSCO for letter concerning quarry
Published Friday, July 24, 2009
VINCENT EBSCO Industries’ company-wide letter expressing concern over White Rock Quarries’ proposed limestone quarry in Vincent is nothing but a “smokescreen,” said White Rock spokesperson Stephen Bradley.
The letter expresses concerns over sinkholes that could be caused by the quarry in the future and also claims EBSCO could end operations in Vincent if the quarry is approved.
Bradley termed the letter a “scare tactic.”
“EBSCO is worried that, because White Rock’s pay and benefits are nearly twice what EBSCO pays, EBSCO will be forced to pay considerably more to be competitive in keeping employees,” Bradley said. “For the past 40 years, EBSCO has had a good deal. It hasn’t had any competition with any other big employer in the area.”
Bradley said White Rock has had two meetings with EBSCO, at EBSCO’s request, to discuss the quarry project and discuss any concerns EBSCO had. At the last meeting, EBSCO president F. Dixon Brooke Jr. committed to meeting again for more discussions, Bradley said.
“It’s unfortunate that (Brooke) chose the scare tactic of the letter and news release over continued good faith discussions,” he said.
Bradley said White Rock could point to residences and businesses near other Alabama quarries that have held up well for years.
He also said EBSCO’s Vulcan Information Packaging plant in Vincent has open sinkholes, which have been left untended for years. Sinkholes are bad for the environment because pollutants can drain through them into the ground.
“Our property is downgrade from EBSCO, and we are worried about groundwater pollution coming from EBSCO into our property,” Bradley said. “As a matter of fact, one of the first things we will do is install monitoring wells to determine how serious that groundwater pollution coming from EBSCO might be.”
Bradley said White Rock hopes EBSCO would not end operations in Vincent because of the quarry project.
“It is both sad and unfortunate that EBSCO would use tactics like this to try to sabotage a project that could bring tremendous financial and tax benefits to Vincent and higher-paying jobs for citizens,” he said.

Once again, an outside company and a spokesman who is their public relationship contact have seriously missed the mark on this. There maybe other companies in the state one could agrue with, but NOT EBSCO! You have shamed yourself and exposed your lack of insight as to who you have attacked, but more so the low level of how you attack. There is not one person in Vincent or surrounding area who hasn't worked for VIP or has had a relative who did. The FACT IS ALL OF ALABAMA OWES EBSCO A WORD OF THANKS. THEY ARE WHAT BUSINESS SHOULD BE.
They are fair, hard working, honest, a true working partner of Alabama. They never scam, or miss lead, lied or deceive. They have never gone into any situation stating one thing and meaning another. EVEN WHEN THE GOING IS TOUGH. THEY ARE A CLASS ACT, AND STEPHEN BRADLEY AND WHITE ROCK SHOULD HUSH AND TAKE A LESSON ON JUST HOW TO RUN A BUSINESS FROM EBSCO. YOU WOULD HAVE TO LOOK LONG AND HARD FOR ANYONE TO SAY ANYTHING NEGATIVE ABOUT EBSCO.
I have many people from Miami Dade prepared to share their thoughts about White Rock though. Care to hear from a few?????????

White Rock was obviously prepared to use EBSCO against any negative opinion on their proposed quarry. What a shame these people will go to this extent to try to force their quarry on this area, while trying to cause their main competition for employees out.
We all know that there are sinkholes all over the area. We also know the White Rock quarry will create more, for miles around their hole, they even said so at the July 16 meeting.
So why would Vincent officals even consider the bums at White Rock for a future business in the area? Only real leadership can stand up for what the people want. Only real leadership can guide the area into gaining real postive employers, like EBSCO, to the area.

Thank you for your smart fire back comments -- I imagine (and hope) you just may have sealed the deal in a negative way for White Rock. Thank you for showing your true colors in such brilliance. You make EBSCO shine even brighter in Vincent.

THANK GOODNESS THE LIES AND DECEPTIVE TACTICS OF WHITE ROCK AND STEVEN BRADLEY AND ASSOCIATES HAVE FINALLY BEEN EXPOSED. THANK YOU EBSCO, AND MAY YOUR LIGHT CONTINUE TO SHINE AND EXPOSE THE REAL TRUTH ABOUT THIS AWFUL ABOMINATION.

First of all I would like to say that I am not for or against the quarry. I work in the area and keep up with the news. The sad reality of it all is that wether the quarry comes in or not, something is going to have to improve in Vincent for it to be able to survive. The town is starving to death off of lack of revenue sources. Vincent already has a part-time at best police department, and basicly a non-existant fire department that relies on other towns to cover thier slack. I just wonder and wish I could know what would become of Vincent with the quarry, but on the other hand it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see what will happen without it.

I don't mind saying that I am for the quarry. I went to both open houses and have done my own research. White Rock will be good for Vincent. Both EBSCO and the quarry can operate side by side. I do think it is over the top to suggest that the quarry will cause VIP to shut down at its current location. If that were the case, the entire town of Leeds would shut down and each commercial and industrial business would also shut down--not to mention the nearby residents moving. Look at all of the other businesses near other quarries in Shelby County. Putting in a drinking water well has the potential to cause sinkholes in karst topography (i.e., wherever limestone is located), I don't hear folks threatening to close shop because of those risk. ...just my thoughts.

Well, it looks like somebody has finally had the courage (although the White Rock PR guy is taking a lot of heat over it) to talk about an issue that most of us already know about: that is, that VIP/EBSCO has been in Vincent for 40 years and has really done very little to help the community. I'm not saying provide jobs. That's been a big plus. But, for example, I know for a fact that both the middle/high school and the elementary school have begged EBSCO for help in the past and have basicaly been stonewalled (except for a few free binders - which were probably overruns or seconds anyway). Sounds like somebody got under somebody's skin to me.

I agree with goquarry462. Here's a Co. that comes to town and has already contributed more to our schools in a few months than any other local businesses I know of, including EBSCO, has in decades. Being shown up probably doesn't sit to well with a Co. like EBSCO. I may not exactly like the fact that it's a quarry (noise, dust, etc.), but at least it's something to start pumping dollars into our local economy, which we badly need.

I am a 39 year old resident of Sylacauga, where there is a quarry which has been in existence since the early 1800's. I couldn't imagine Sylacauga without the quarry. This quarry had its own community, where there were schools, post offices, homes and more. I don't understand the opposition to White Rock coming in to Vincent. At a time when there are so many people out of a job, how could this be a bad thing?

Has Ebsco already been laying people off and cutting other peoples hours? So they are already in trouble and it has nothing to do with White Rock.
Plus i sent someone out to apply for a job a couple of years back and they came back and laughed in my face because of the start out pay at Ebsco.
Thank you White Rock i really appreciate the money you donated to our schools.
We lost 7-10 teachers last year our budget was cut so much we are having to ask for toilet paper and soap tonight.
I called a local company and asked them for a toilet paper donation and was told NO.

LIES, LIES, AND MORE LIES.
STEVEN BRADLEY AND ASSOCIATES HAVE HELPED WHITEROCK LIE, CHEAT AND SWINDLE VINCENT RESIDENTS OUT OF THEIR PROPERTY.
THEY HAVE TOLD SO MANY LIES, NOW THEY HAVE TO STOOP EVEN LOWER AND TELL EVEN BIGGER LIES.
BRADLEY TERMED THE LETTER A "SCARE TACTIC'. YES, HE'S BEEN EXPOSED AND HE'S SCARED.
HE TALKED ABOUT "GOOD FAITH DISCUSSIONS". HE WOULDN'T KNOW A "GOOD FAITH DISCUSSION" IF HE EVER HAD ONE, BECAUSE HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT "GOOD FAITH" IS.
TO IMPLY THAT EBSCO IS POLLUTING THE ENVIRONMENT, WELL THATS JUST LIKE THE POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK.
BRADLEY, YOU NEED TO SHUT UP, PACK UP, AND GO HOME. AND TAKE WHITE ROCK WITH YOU. WE ARE TIRED OF YOUR LIES.

for (Sylacaugaresident), ask your local Picklesimer Ford dealer. They had to shut down because of sinkhole caused by a quarry and are in litigation at this very moment. GO BY AND ASK THEM HOW IT HAS AFFECTED THEM AND THE CITY TAX BASE.

Sooooooooo Vincentparent, you are into Janice jackson, it is not what you have done for 40 yrs, it more like what have you done for us latley? you speak as you are the first parent of a child in school. This has gone on for years. Proration was inacted over 30 yrs ago. All schools are suffering then and now, but make no excuse, it is not our corp neighbors who are at fault. Ask your own parent, they gave to your school as well. That is how life works. Instead of blaming Ebsco or any other corporation, understand how your city govt. works. Not just now, but for the last 20 yrs. You are not the first parent to send a case of toilet paper to school and you will not be the last. Well run schools are not by accident, like all success in life it start from the inside and usually overcomes obstacles from within.

I don't understand how you can blame Ebsco for the condition of the schools. If you need help with school problems -- why are you not looking to the parents for the assistance needed. Have fund raisers, ask parents to donate time and money and take advantage of the different talents of the parents. Don't wait for folks to ask what they can do -- go to all of the parents and ask for their expertise and put their particular talents to work. Every person can contribte in some way. Stop wishing things would happen -- and make things happen! Take pride in your school -- when you work hard for something you have a greater feeling of pride than when something is given to you.
If you would put as much time and energy into planning ways to raise money as you do into complaining about what you do not have -- you might come up with some really great fund raisers for your school.

No where in my post did i blame Ebsco for the shape our school is in. Stop putting words in people post.
And it's Janet Jackson not Janice Jackson. And just for the record what has Ebsco done for our schools in the past? Please tell us what have they done. I really and truely wanna know.
All i know is this much and this is an old beaten down path we keep talking about but this is what i know.
Our school needs help no matter where it comes from we need help. It's a fact. Our city is not going to do it Our county is not going to do it, Our parents cant afford to do it, we need help.
I suggest you people that don't want the quarry start helping us fix this problem with our school other wise we want the quarry.
You tell you all the time to not sacrifice your land when our parents can fundraise, all i can tell you is, if you wanna stop the quarry then help us get money to fix our school.

QUARRY QUARRELLING JUST WON'T GET IT. WHILE WE ARE QUARRELLING WITH EACH OTHER, STEVEN BRADLEY CAN MARCH 6 ELEPHANTS THRU THE ROOM, AND NO ONE WILL EVEN NOTICE.
THE QUARRY IS NOT THE REAL ISSUE HERE. BAMARAMA70 HAS HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD WHEN HE SAID"THE SAD REALITY OF IT ALL IS THAT WHETHER THE QUARRY COMES OR NOT, SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE TO IMPROVE VINCENT FOR IT TO BE ABLE TO SURVIVE".
NOQUARRY462 GOES FARTHER TO SAY THAT "ONLY REAL LEADERSHIP CAN STAND UP FOR WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT. ONLY REAL LEADERSHIP CAN GUIDE IT INTO GAINING REAL POSITIVE EMPLOYERS, LIKE EBSCO, TO THE AREA"
OUR BIGGEST PROBLEM IS NOT THE QUARRY, IT IS A LACK OF REAL LEADERSHIP. LET'S STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SCHOOLS, THE LACK OF JOBS AND THE LACK OF ECOMOMIC GROWTH IN VINCENT AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE. WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST?
SURELY WE CAN COME UP WITH SOMETHING BETTER THAN A ROCK QUARRY.
THERE WILL BE A CITIZENS MEETING THIS THURSDAY, JULY 30TH AT 6:30PM AT THE VINCENT REVIVAL CENTER ON HWY 85. UNBIASED EXPERTS IN GEOLOGY, TOXICOLOGY, BLASTING, AND NOISE POLLUTION WILL BE THERE ANSWERING UN-REHEARSED QUESTIONS. WHETHER YOU ARE FOR OR AGAINST THE QUARRY, YOU NEED TO BE THERE TO FIND OUT THE TRUTH.

Vincentparent evidentaly is either not concerned that the elementry children will be breathing the lime dust all day, every day at school, or is full of WR cool-aid.
It's about time Shelby County School Board did some research and release the information on the dangers of the dust at the school.
Killing our kids for 30 pieces of silver is NOT avery good deal.

People who have property on the 62 river loop have a lot of concerns for the White Rock quarry that is being propose there. I bought land on the river loop for an investment. All the people that had land the quarry wanted made a nice profit for thier land. How about the people who live and have property there now? Once the quarry goes in, I don't think there is going to be that many buyers wanting this property. Why should the people that live in this area loose value for their property just so White Rocks makes hundreds of millions of dollars off the rock located there. It is their job to convince the people who live there now that it's going to be a area that other people will want to buy, and they will want to live in for the rest of their livies. The people on the river loop should have a change to either sell or stay, and this needs to be settled before the permits and contracts with white Rock Quarries are issued. I have a feeling that once this quarry begins operation that our concerns wont matter at all to WHITE ROCK QUARRIES. What do the other property owners in the area have to say?

for (landowner), you need to check your facts, Pickleseimer sold their business to Long Lewis Ford, which downsized last year due to the economy.

No_quarry, thanks for the info on the meeting. I plan to be there.
However, when you say "unbiased experts" will be there, are you referring to those hired by EBSCO? If the experts provided by White Rock are considered biased because they were hired by White Rock, doesn't that mean that those hired by EBSCO are also biased for their employer's position?

Don't live there; got no dog in this hunt.
Just wondering if all the time spent blogging on this post could be better spent trying to secure money for schools, lobbying business to come to Vincent, finding better candidates to run for office. It sounds like you are ALL concerned for your neighborhood. Why not ban together to improve it instead of fighting openly which discourages other business and homebuyers from moving there?Just my thoughts but I guess you will fire back that it is not my concern.

White Rock needs dig a little deeper into Ebsco and their Vincent plant. They will find things not even headquaters knows .Ebsco is not so big and bad no more, since E.B himself pasted away. The sorriest place on earth. If it was not a law they would not even start you out at 7.25 a hour.

Noquarry, you are the best thing going for the quarry with comments like that. I have taken the time to look at the technology that the company has committed to using...and it looks like there will be no/very little dust off site. They are covering all conveyors, using wet sprays along all of them, and they are loading everything inside a building with more dust controls. You cannot compare this new technology to quarries built 50 years ago. You should be ashamed using Vincent children to scare people.

economybooster,Shelbycitizen,VincentQuarry stay on this web site just to argue. Don't even answer them. THEY ARE ONLY CONCERNED ABOUT THEMSELVES. If you have a comment they will turn it around against you. They have no facts just their own interest. ARGUE<ARGUE. People of Vincent will help those who help themselves. Vincent Schools has problems as all schools in Shelby County has. This is not a city school such as Hoover. Why do you think our county school will be solved by WRQ, a one time gift or bribe, You seem to not know where you live, the facts are WRQ will make lots of money more than you will ever dream of. The schools in Vincent wiil have the same problems if they are able to get the permits to build. WQR stuck a foot in their mouth when Bradley responded to EBSCO. At this time he is under a no comment order. Will Bradley respond again?

White Rock is most likely a done deal. And Ebsco or VIP are only looking for someone to blame for them shutting down, so them don't look so bad. And in response to the Vincent schools, all shelby county school may be hurting now,but Vincent has always been the red-haired step child of shelby county, because of all the new businesses and houses improving the taxes in other parts of the county, so maybe with the taxes off White Rock things will improve at Vincent, if shelby county will put that money back into Vincent and not send it to other parts of the county. White Rock is at least giving money directly to Vincent,The only thing VIP has done is maybe send some paper or binders that were overstock or damaged( most likely damaged) and could not be sold anyway, so rather than throw them away they donated them so they could say they donated.
