UM ranked, McLeod honored

Published Tuesday, March 3, 2009

The University of Montevallo baseball team received word of two honors Wednesday, receiving its first national ranking and first Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week honor this season.

UM (13-5-1) broke into the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper NCAA Division II National Poll at No. 30 Wednesday after spending the last few weeks in the receiving votes category. The Falcons enter the rankings for the first time since Feb. 18, 2008. They are tied for at No. 30 with Sonoma State, Erskine and Cal. State Dominguez Hills.

The only other Gulf South Conference East Division team in the rankings is No. 7 University of North Alabama.

Also Wednesday, junior left-handed pitcher Caleb McLeod was named the GSC East Pitcher of the Week. McLeod was nearly flawless on the mound for the Falcons in their second game against Bluefield State this past Saturday. The Pleasant Grove native hurled the team’s first complete game of the season, allowing just two hits and a run with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work. The junior did not walk a batter as UM claimed the series, 8-1.

The Falcons host Urbana University Tuesday and Wednesday at 3 p.m. before taking on No. 18 Ouachita Baptist University in a three game series at home on Saturday and Sunday.
