Vincent Town Council member Ralph Kimble, in white, gestures to a scale model of the proposed limestone quarry. Kimble has publicly stated he is against the quarry.

Quarry company makes presentation to citizens

— A line of people seeking information snaked out of Vincent Elementary School's side entrance Tuesday evening.

The crowd gathered to find out more about the Vecellio Group, a West Palm Beach, Fla. company that has purchased more than 1,000 acres in Vincent with the intent of opening a limestone quarry.

Officials from the Vecellio group presented plans for the quarry project.

Those at the meeting had many different perspectives on the quarry project, including Kelvin Datcher, a representative of the Concerned Citizens of Vincent; Rob Fowler, a lawyer for the Vecellio Group; and Vincent Mayor Ray McAllister.

Vecellio Group representative Rob Fowler, an environmental lawyer with Birmingham-based law firm Balch and Bingham, assured people that the company is using some of the best available mining technology, including state-of-the-art dust control systems.

"You hear people yelling and screaming about the dust, but we're capturing the dust," he said.

The Vecellio Group would also provide noise barriers, limited visibility of the quarry itself through use of sod walls, online notification of blasting schedules, long-term lake and woodland restoration plans and a community outreach program, to include financial support for local scholarships and schools.

According to Vecellio Group officials, Vincent and Shelby County stand to gain a lot from the possible quarry. The company estimated that over a 10-year period, the county could gain more than $6 million in tax revenues from the company and its employees, and Vincent could receive more than $5.5 million.

QUESTIONS REMAIN

While Vincent citizens got some answers, many of them left with even more questions.

Fowler especially attracted a small crowd through much of the meeting, with citizens directing their questions — or complaints — to him.

"If you don't get the zoning permits, what will you do with the property?" asked citizen Ed Bartlett.

"I don't know. It's our property, so I imagine we'll hang on to it," Fowler replied.

"My property value is going down, and you can say what you want to about that," said resident Mickey Kitchens.

Away from the crowd surrounding Fowler, Mayor Ray McAllister said that although he felt the meeting went well, he still had questions about the quarry and wouldn't throw his support to one side or the other until he got answers.

"I still don't have near enough information. There's a lot of questions that need to be answered," he said. "I plan on asking those questions."

Felix Dunn, who owns Spring Creek Antiques in Vincent, said he hadn't made up his mind one way or another on the project.

"I really don't know yet because I don't know enough about it yet. I've lived here all my life, and I have to weigh the pros and cons," he said. "The possible pro would be jobs in the area. But this could bring businesses in or it could drive businesses out."

Council member Ralph Kimble, who has publicly stated his position against the quarry, said he wouldn't change his mind.

"You cannot put a dollar figure on quality of life," he said. "What they do here will affect that. I don't care what they say."

I see The City of Calera is cutting back to 4 days. I guess their quarries are not producing like White Rock would.

I am 75 yrs old, born and raised in Vincent, my father was a sharecropper. Geologist came to our area where at the time our family was living, done core samples on the property. No one new what it was all about, The geologist never told anyone what they had found. The land owners had no idea. They knew at that time, the older generation would not sell their land because they had sweated and earned a living off the land and wouldn't give it up. So they have waited, now the harvest is coming in, what they had found was a pure limestone quality of rock. Why would you sell land that has pure limestone, because you were born with a silverspoon in your mouth, Jimmy Hassett was giving
this land by his father Dalton, he never sweated an ounce of anything like his brothers and sisters, Mrs Rex Smiley, she has suffered a great deal at the hands of her brother Jimmy Hassett. The Flemings sold their 6 acres because as a sharecropper family they lost most of their land during hard times. This mayor McAllistor does not care, If so he would trash the limestone preposal. Maybe someone else has made money within this family.

Somebody in his family profited alright, the public records show that to be the case to the tune of 835,000.00.

Check for yourself regarding the Greene place.

I agree with Mr. Dunn on the part of bringing new business in or may drive business' out. If the quarry comes to Vincent and I can't afford to give my land away and move elsewhere then I will atleast have the choice of spending my money somewhere other than vincent.

Shelby county commision has the last say so involving the limestone quarry located in Vincent Al. Make a response to these commisioners who have already look at what is going on. The last Geologists core sample was in 1986. 23 yrs ago. Our town is being invaded by Shelby County not Vincent, Geologists found limestone then. Now they want to harvest it. Some people sold out. First of all the mayor has to be against it. The zoning board of Vincent has to be against rezoning property from agriculture to commercial. A few people in Vincent is not the only ones making money. Shelby county will take the taxes from this limestone quarry and sadly squabble over where the money goes. Vincent will be at the back of the lists

Let's take a another look who is on the zoning board in Vincent, Al. Another name that comes to my mind is Jim Hairston. Jim Hairston I believe that I read supports a Quarry being built in Vincent. Why? Jim Hairston is the son in law of Mr. Tom Bell who years ago inherited the Florey property. The Florey's owned a tremendous amount of land in Vincent. They were two ladies that were decendants of the Embrey's, one was a Florey who owned alot of land in Vincent. Both of these ladies maiden names was Embrey. When these ladies died they had no heirs to leave their property to. They left it to Mr. Tom Bell. This has concerned me. Jim Hairston who now lives in their house which was giving to him by Mr. Tom Bell may have a big interest in this Quarry. Maybe profited from land sells? Which alot of property these two ladies owned. Who is Robbin Florey? A decendant of any of these families, Embrey's, Florey's, Hairston or Bells. Who appointed Jim Hairston to the zoning board? Who appointed McAllistor 2007 to the zoning board? Who appointed Driggers to the zoning board? A lot of questions need to be answered, There won't be, What Mayor McAllistor said in the Daily Home and I quote" Some of the people this week who have come to see me have been a 100% for it, and some are against it ". End quote. Is this an intelligent statement. I don't think so. I believe his mind for this QUARRY is already made up , not against it, but for it. Land owners who have sold their land including his inlaws, were part of the aggreement to build a quarry in Vincent. Don't be fooled by the hoopala, this company says about jobs, controlling the enviroment. It won't happen. This is a ploy, technique used by any Industry wanting to make alot of money. Vincent will suffer as a results .

Let us take another look at a well known family in Vincent Al. The Gorman family. They owned several stores in Vincent. Ma Gilley Gorman is remembered for her longevity as being an honest person. Jimmy Gorman married into the Embry family. Mrs Gorman father was an Embry in Calcus Al. Who benifited, the kids. Who bought the Kings farm on 231 north of Vincent and built a large house there? Where did the money come from? Look people of Vincent do not let McAllistor fool you. HE IS TROUBLE FOR THE TOWN OF VINCENT. Most people will suffer like people who was in the Korean WAR . iNCOMING the blasts from the quarry.

I have to say I am quite amused at some of the comments that I have read since the prospects of the quarry have been announced. I have been reading now for weeks, just sitting back and laughing at the ignorance of so many. Some of you seem to say you know the facts and you are so quick to throw stones at good men such as Jimmy Hassett, Don Driggers, and Mayor McAllister. I have to call out “Thor” specifically. You claim to be a 75 year resident of Vincent, however if you were, you would probably know that Jimmy Hassett is an only child. You mention “Mrs Rex Smiley, she has suffered a great deal at the hands of her brother Jimmy Hassett”. Funny thing about your comment, Jimmy doesn’t have a sister!! Get your facts straight before you start mouthing off. And to answer you questions about who appointed McAllister, Driggers and Hairston to the zoning board, that would be the previous Mayor, Terry Allen, and his administration. Previous Mayor Allen has also made it very clear that he in no way had anything to do with the prospects of the quarry coming to town. The land in question is all zoned as agricultural and was NOT changed while these men were on the zoning board. So what is your point? And references to the Embreys, Bells, and Jim Gorman?? What difference does it make who owned their land, where the money came, or whatever. They obviously have nothing to do with the quarry. Their land was not purchased by Vecellio. You try to make yourself sound like some kind of smart conspiracy theorist, but all you are actually doing is making yourself look like a moron. There is no point to your references.
And in reference to the mayor’s role in all this, all of these land transactions were happening before the Mayor was ever elected. So exactly how could he be to blame for anything. The Mayor has been very clear that he too is undecided on the project and needs additional information before he can make a decision on whether to be for or against it.
Seems to me that at this point, no one knows if this is a good deal or a bad deal. It is time to listen, ask questions, and learn as much as you can about this project. It is not time to cast stones upon your neighbors. Perhaps some of you are just jealous that no one bought your land!

In response to thor (anonymous)May 27, 10:08 p.m., You do not have any idea "who benefitted". Jimmy Gorman practically gave away most of what he had and those recipients know who they are. I am married to James O. Gorman, Jr., and I bought the King's farm. The house is not that large, but that is none of your business either. Just like it is not your business where the money came from to build it. You should spend less time gossiping, and more time saying kind words and doing acts of kindness. And what does this have to do with your feelings about the Mayor?? Mr. Mc Allister, by the way, is doing an excellent job in this community.

I have made my comments to let the people of Vincent to wake up. Look at your friends or foe. Certain people in Vincent have a grudge against someone who knows what's going on . Why? I know them, Mayor McAllistor, by the way, is doing a good an excellent job in our community. Most people don't know him. HE HAS OWNLY LIVE HERE FOR SEVERAL YEARS."Gorman response."Mr. Mc Allistor. by the way, is doing an excellent job in this community". Amused doesn't know about the history of the Hasset family.

When you are 75 yrs old sometimes you have to understand you may not get everything right, I REMEMBER jimmy hassett was an only child, WHY? I remember Mrs. Smiley was kin to him. He was a spoiled child. The thing about the Vincent city council meeting June 2, you will see who is against this quarry or who is for it. Remember this industry will in the long term have a negative impact on our enviroment in Vincent. Most of the council members and the mayor will say don't listen to rumors about the quarry. Name calling or who is for it or against it. The fact is your home will be damage.

THOR....bless your heart. I can't wait to attend the council meeting on June 2nd. Hopefully, the hoods will be removed from the morons heads and we can see you face to face making stupid comments!

I can understand everyones comments and concern what is happening around your homes and families. I to am a mother of 8 and a grandmother of soon to be 22.
But, my concern is how will the fathers and mothers of families feed their childern or give them medical care that they need!! Have you looked in your wallets latley or looked in your cabnets? Do you have the food to feed your kids or the money to buy them the basic needs?
If so you are better off than most.
A year ago both my husband and I worked and had great insurance. However, I was involed in an auto accident now I can not work and it may be another year before I MAY get Social Securty D. My husband works but the money he makes we are just able to pay our bills and have something one the table. By the way we do not have ins. .So if I go to the Dr. and he gives me RXs we have to choice between filling the RX or eating. (By the way we can not get any type of help like food stamps or medical coverage)
This quarry is going to employ over a 100 people. That means maybe food in someones belly and a roof over their heads.
I just want everyone to think of it from this view.
Just follow your heart and remember maybe God put it there for a reason.
God Bless.

In reading comments being made, it appears people are more concerned with who is making money from selling property rather than the quarry itself. No one is bothering to learn the facts of the case to determine if it is a good idea or not. Amused is correct, many of you are simply throwing stones at your neighbors and seem to be jealous that your land wasn't purchased.

This quarry offers the prospect of jobs and resources to improve our community. Take a break from badmouthing your neighbors and take time to find out the facts about the quarry itself.

Posted by thor (anonymous) on June 5, 2009 at 7:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I have no land to purchase, I am in a nursing home. Why do you want a limestone quarry in Vincent? THE JOBS has nothing to do with this quarry. Money is the reason for this quarry.Who will benefit, not the average person. People who have already made a deal will benefit, big bucks. What is this quarry all about? Money for everyone invovled, making this quarry sound like a good neighbor. Residents of Vincent has long been run by people who does not look at the future of Vincent. Vincent is a peaceful town. If you don't like it move. Bring in an industry that is enviromental friendly. Don't bring in an industry that will pollute the enviroment and lower your property value. Please do a good Mayor.

Posted by Shelbycitizen (anonymous) on June 10, 2009 at 1:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Who will benefit? Actually, the average citizen of Vincent will benefit. Tax dollars coming in go to schools, fire departments, police departments, roads, civic programs,...the list could go on. Two towns nearby that have quarries are Calera and Alabaster. Take a look at their property values. They have faired better than many towns without quarries. Why? Because of economic growth. This growth funds the things that make a town better and more desireable to live in. No one wants to live in a town with bad schools, no place to shop, or bad roads becuase we can't afford to pave the streets.

If I had a dollar for every candidate that came by my house soliciting a vote for Mayor and said and I quote; :I want to keep Vincent small", I could buy lunch.

You can't have it both ways.

I suppose "small" was fine until so much money came into play regarding the quarry.

Who told the city to sell most it's buildings downtown to one person anyway? Sure, everybody has a right to buy what they want, but if one person owns most of the town's buildings that makes it a bit difficult for development to occur at a fair price.

If you buy a building for let's say 10,000.00 or 3,500.00 and ask 100,000.00 or 35,000.00 for the same building with no improvements to it aren't you being just a little greedy?

How do I know? Check the deeds. No rumor there, just facts in black and white.

So, what is the latest word on the quarry?

I do not live near Vincent, but I can not understand a town not wanting to help it's people when so many jobs are being lost? Vincent has a chance to help create jobs so men and women can take care of their families.

Do the one's of you oppose the quarry help support local shelders and food banks?

Okay -- amused, thro,em

As for me the concern is not who has made money, who is jealous about who has made money, who is a "moron", the Gormans buying property, etc. The concern is greed and how it may destoy our good water, good air, good solid living conditions. (How do the Gormans even factor into this?)

It has been commented that the Vecellio group did NOT purchase the property that Jimmy Hassett and others sold. However, I believe it was purchased FOR the Vecellio group.

It is hard for me to believe someone would sell their family farm (been in the family for 80 plus years) and not know what the plans were for the property. I am hearing people say "poor Jimmy and Carolyn (Hassett's wife) they were lied to. They were never told that the Hassett Farm would become a Limestone Quarry. " If this is true (and I don't believe it is) were they (Jimmy and Carolyn) so anxious to sell -- they forgot to ask what's going to happen to the "home place" of my grandparents (Mike and Bell Hassett) and my parents ( Dalton and Shirley Hassett)? How proud they must be to know their beautiful 285 acre farm will soon become "Vincent Hills Limestone Quarry".

I believe they (Jimmy and Carolyn) just did not care what was to become of the awesome gift passed on to Jimmy. While it is true -- it was his to sell -- if he wanted to do right by the property and his family (those gone on and those who remain) he would have made the land available to them at the same $ amount -- but I understand he never made any of his Family members (Uncle Owen, Uncle Mike, Aunt Mary or Aunt Louise) aware of his plans to sell. They learned he had already sold out when they heard gossip around town that he (Jimmy) had ALREADY made the deal.

To each his/her opinion -- mine is -- if the Hassett Farm had not sold -- none of this Quarry business would be upon us today.
