Alabaster council president to run for house seat

Published Thursday, May 21, 2009

Alabaster City Council President Jim McClain has announced he will seek the Republican nomination for the Alabama House of Representatives District 49 seat.

The seat McClain seeks is currently held by Cam Ward (R-Alabaster), who recently announced he will run for the Hank Erwin’s Alabama Senate seat in 2010. Erwin announced he will be seeking the nomination for Lt. Gov.

“My experience as a council member has been one of offering solutions to problems and responding to the needs of my constituents,” McClain said. “I will have big shoes to fill in replacing Cam Ward, who’s been a tireless advocate for District 49.”

House District 49 is comprised of a part of Shelby and Bibb Counties. Currently, McClain is president of the Alabaster City Council, representing Ward 5.

“I’ll spend a lot of time getting to know folks in Shelby County and Bibb County and listening to their concerns,” McClain said. "I want to expand my service beyond Alabaster and into Bibb County."

McClain is co-owner of SMMS, Inc. in Alabaster, and he has been a councilman since 2000.

"Taking office in October of 2000 was a major change from being in the private business sector," McClain said. "And we've been able to accomplish a lot since then."

He is married to Bonnie McClain of 29 years, and they have four sons: Robbie, Cory, Jamie and Colby.
