Quarry only benefits the few, not many

Published Tuesday, November 3, 2009

Dear Editor,

Sacrifice the few for the benefit of many.

That’s what I thought when I first heard that a rock quarry was proposed for Vincent.

Since I live on the River Loop, it would be in my front yard. Everyone on Bates Road and the River Loop will have to move.

So I thought, they will sacrifice 50 or 60 families for the benefit of the town.

But when I looked at the map and began to measure distance, I found that downtown Vincent is only about 2.5 miles from the blast point.

I found that Harpersville is only 4 miles from the blast point. I realized that everyone in Vincent and Harpersville would be sacrificed.

So now we are talking about sacrificing the many for the benefit of the few.

The few being the people who sold out to White Rock Mining at substantial profits and moved out of the county.

Mr. Cantrell is correct that city hall is willing to sacrifice, and it appears they are willing to sacrifice the entire town of Vincent to allow this quarry. Sacrifice by pitting one side of town against the other. Sacrifice by knowing that all the way to Hwy 83 will be decimated by sinkholes. Sacrifice by destroying the property value of tens of thousands of acres. Sacrifice by the citizens, for the gain of _ _ _ _ _ who?
