Thompson ROTC sweeps regional competition

Published Monday, November 23, 2009

The Thompson High School Junior ROTC program recently brought home a string of top honors from a regional drill competition.

Seventeen members of the school’s Air Force Junior ROTC program brought home gold or silver medals in nine categories at the American Legion Southeastern Regional Indoor Drill Competition, which was held Nov. 7.

The students competed against 19 other high schools from across the Southeast, who represented Marine Corps, Army and Air Force JROTC programs.

During the competition, the Thompson team won first place in the unarmed drill, unarmed color guard, facsimile color guard, facsimile drill, facsimile inspection, overall facsimile best and demilitarized color guard categories.

The team also brought home second place honors in the unarmed inspection and demilitarized inspection categories.

“The kids from Alabaster earned every one of the awards they brought home,” said Sgt. Dee Terrell, Thompson High School ROTC instructor. “They earned it by each person shouldering their own load and working together as a team.”
