Published Friday, February 5, 2010

A Helena resident and UAB student died Feb. 5 in a wreck on Interstate 459.

Layla Nicole Ghabayen, 21, was traveling northbound on I-459 at approximately 10:25 a.m. when her car ran off the road a half a mile before the U.S. 31 exit.

Hoover Police Capt. Jim Coker said the car slid down an embankment and hit a tree. Ghabayen died at the scene.

A female passenger was taken to UAB Hospital, where she is in stable condition, Coker said.

He said he was unsure why the car ran off the road. Police are continuing to investigate.

Ghabayen was a Pelham High School graduate.
