Cornerstone boys, girls claim region championship

The Cornerstone Christian School boys' and girls' basketball teams each captured an Alabama Independent Schools Association Class 1A, Region 1 championship Feb. 6 at Southern Union Community College in Wadley.
The Cornerstone girls claimed the Region 1 title by defeating Abbeville Christian 31-24 in the championship game. Destiny Dillard led the Lady Chargers (19-3) with 10 points. Dillard added five rebounds.
Kailey Goodwin chipped in seven points, nine rebounds and six steals. Chelsey Dunnaway had a team-high 10 rebounds. Dunnaway, who was named the tournament's most valuable player, Dillard and Nichole Davis were named to the AISA Class 1A, Region 1 all-tournament team.
Cornerstone will meet Restoration Academy in the AISA Class 1A Elite Eight Feb. 11 at Huntingdon College in Montgomery.
The Cornerstone boys claimed the Region 1 championship with a 62-28 win over Abbeville Christian. Kendall Moore led Cornerstone with 14 points. J.V. McKinney added 13 points and Stephen Bulger chipped in 12 points. Colton Wingard had a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Chargers (24-0) will face Sparta Academy in the AISA Class 1A Elite Eight Feb. 11 at Huntingdon College in Montgomery.

BOYS
Coosa Valley 41, Dixie Academy 39
John Bullen led the Rebels (17-10) with 13 points in the AISA Class 1A, Region 1 consolation game. Gage Holmes, who hit the game-winning basket as time expired, added 10 points. Zaid Kayyali and Hunter Winslett chipped in eight points each.
Coosa Valley will face Warrior Academy in the Class 1A Elite Eight Feb. 11 at Huntingdon College in Montgomery.
GIRLS
Kingwood Christian 46, Bessemer Academy 31
Lauren Rozof led the Lions (17-6) with 24 points and 12 rebounds in the AISA Class 3A, Region 2 championship game at Alabama Southern Community College in Monroeville. Rozof, who also recorded three blocked shots, was named the Region 2 tournament most valuable player.
Katherine Stockman and Whitney Gillespie joined Rozof on the Region 2 all-tournament team.
The Lions advanced to the AISA Class 3A Elite Eight Feb. 12 at Faulkner University in Montgomery, where Kingwood will face Glenwood Academy.
Coosa Valley 44, Chambers Academy 42
Lauren Archer led the Lady Rebels (16-9) with 22 points in the Class 1A, Region 1 consolation game. Jordan Smiley added 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Coosa Valley will meet Sparta Academy in the AISA Class 1A Elite Eight Feb. 11 at Huntingdon College in Montgomery.
