"Crimes of the Heart" opens at South City

ALABASTER — SouthCity Theater opened the curtains Feb. 5 on its latest play “Crimes of the Heart.”

The production, portrayed in the 1980s film with Jessica Lange, Diane Keaton and Sissy Spacek, follows the three Magrath sisters, Meg, Babe and Lenny, who reunite at Old Granddaddy's home in Hazlehurst, Miss. after Babe shoots her abusive husband. Each sister now faces the consequences of “crimes of the heart.”

Theater President Francie Gardener said she was elated to be directing this tragic comedy.

“It’s been a lot of fun working with the grown ups,” said Gardener, who spends much of her time working with SCT’s children’s program, Acting Up. “I love working with our kids but this was just a nice change.”

The story is a bitter sweet take on the small town southern life. SCT’s production includes six cast members: Amy Light as Lenny, Ashley Richardson as Chick, Ashley Renfroe as Doc Porter, Raya Awwad as Meg, Amanda Kramer as Babe and Tony Lovell as Barnette.

The company is midway through its 10th season and still has a long list of productions and workshops in the works including “Driving Miss Daisy,” which opens March 12.
