Vincent tops Shades Mountain for area championship

Published Monday, February 8, 2010

The Vincent High School boys' basketball team defeated host Shades Mountain Christian 65-50 in the Class 2A, Area 9 tournament championship game Feb. 8.

Devanta Williams led Vincent with 15 points. Keyon Wallace added 12 points and 14 rebounds. Ben McKinney also chipped in 12 points.

Brothers Juwan and Anterio Rogers finished with 11 points each.

Vincent, which split the regular season series with the Eagles, led Shades Mountain 41-25 at halftime and 51-30 at the end of the third quarter.

"We played with alot of intensity and effort defensively," said Vincent coach John Hadder. "I thought we guarded them well in the full court as well as in the half. We shot the ball from the perimeter well in the first half, which really opens things up for us."

Wallace, who was named the Class 2A, Area 9 tournament's most valuable player, joined Williams and McKinney on the all-tournament team.

The Yellow Jackets (21-7) will host Woodland in a Class 2A sub-regional game in the Alabama High School Athletic Association playoffs Feb. 12. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
