Lady Warriors advance to state tourney

The Thompson High School Lady Warriors advanced to the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A state tournament with a win over Opelika in Sub State action last week at THS.

The Lady Warriors (44-11) defeated Opelika 2-1 in a best-of-three series to advance.

THS, ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 6A, will play No. 1 Clay-Chalkville in the first round of the double-elimination tournament.

The game will be played at Lagoon park at 1:30 Friday afternoon.

Thompson defeated Opelika 6-0 in the first game behind a seven-inning shutout performance by Jennifer McClure.

McClure pitched a no-hitter. One walk in the seventh inning spoiled a perfect game.

The senior struck out 14 batters in her 19th shutout of the season.

All of Thompson’s runs were scored in the fourth inning.

Elizabeth Seales went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring one run and batting in another.

Shannon Goggins was 2-for-4 with a triple and 3 RBI and Stephanie Piggott was 2-for-4 with a double.

Amber Cobb went 2-for-3, scoring one run and stealing one base while Nicole Lowery went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.

Ashley Blankenship was 2-for-3 on the day.

Opelika won the second game of the series 3-2.

McClure was tagged with the loss in nine innings, giving up six hits and striking out 15 batters.

Opelika jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning before THS tied the game in the third.

THS scored the go-ahead run in the ninth inning when eighth-grader Karie McGuire singled in Lowery who reached on a single and stole second.

Opelika fought back with two runs to win the game in the bottom of the night on an Elizabeth Henderson double with two runners on base.

Goggins was 2-for-4 at the plate with a sacrifice bunt and Lowery was 2-for-4, scoring one run and stealing one base.

The Lady Warriors wrapped up the series with a 7-0 win last Saturday.

McClure (30-7) gave up four hits in seven innings to get the win. McClure struck out seven batters in her 20th shutout of the season.

THS scored two runs in the first inning when Piggott drove in Goggins and Blankenship drove in Goggins.

The Lady Warriors added another run in the third inning when Goggins scored on an Amanda Powell double.

Three more runs came for THS in the fourth inning. Hollery Taylor scored one of those runs by stealing home.

Goggins batted in Seales with a single and Piggott had a sacrifice fly which scored Amiee Selman.

THS’ last run came in the seventh inning when Piggott drove in Goggins.

Piggott was 3-for-3 with three doubles and three RBI to lead Thompson. She also had one sacrifice fly and scored one run in the win.

Powell was 2-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI while Goggins went 3-for-4
