An Alabaster man was killed last Saturday after the boat he was in was run over by another boat during a fishing tournament on Lay Lake.

Raymond Webster, an officer with the Alabama Marine Police who patrol Lay Lake, said 30-year-old Jason Douglass likely died from head and neck injuries when the boat he was a passenger in, a 20-foot &uot;runabout&uot; pleasure boat, was struck from behind by a 20-foot bass boat at about noon on Saturday during a tournament which started at Paradise Point Marina.

Webster said Douglass and his brother, John, of Clanton, the driver of the &uot;runabout&uot; boat, were traveling at about 30 miles per hour when they stopped at the outlet of Spring Creek on Lay Lake near Bozo’s Fishing Camp. The second boat trailed from behind, also at about 30 mph.

Webster said the second boat could not stop in time and ran over the first boat. He would not release the name of the driver of the second boat but did say the man was a participant in the tournament.

&uot;It was an accident &045; believe it or not,&uot; Webster said. &uot;When two boats wreck, one runs over the other boat, which acts like a ramp. This is not like a car wreck where the two vehicles bounce off one another.&uot;

Douglass was still conscious, Webster said, when paramedics from Southeast Shelby County Rescue arrived at the scene. He said, however, the Alabaster man soon died before he could be transported to a hospital.

Webster said drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the fatality, one of three boating fatalities last weekend in the Birmingham area.

Webster said he has completed his initial investigation but awaits autopsy results
