Shelby County School System accounts are balanced for the month of June, and local tax revenues continue to run

above budgeted increases.

Davis gave the positive report during the Shelby County Board of Education’s regular July 25 meeting.

He said local tax revenues were budgeted to be up 4.69 percent but in June were running ahead at 5.99 percent.

While Davis said local tax revenues were slightly down from the previous 6 percent level, he said as long as the tax revenues remained above the 4.9 percent budgeted boost there would be no need to cut expenses.

Davis said ad valorem taxes were down, 5.83 percent instead of the budgeted 6.21 percent increase, but sales tax were up, 7.43 percent instead of the budgeted 3.96 percent increase.

He also reported that the alcohol beverage tax was up 5.49 instead of the budgeted 4.62 percent increase.

In other matters the board:

Approved total June expenditures of some $13.5 million.

Approved all personnel matters as presented.

Approved science course study books as presented.

Received a construction report from Director of Operations Tom Ferguson.

Approved a small construction contract with Bennett Building Inc. of Homewood for $19,694 to construct a ramp system at Pelham High School.

Approved a change order for McCrory Building of Birmingham in the amount of an additional $18,055 for additional and alterations to Oak Mountain Middle School.

Approved bids for technology devices, televisions, VCR and DVD equipment, distance learning items, ceiling installation and network wiring.

Granted administrative authority to award the low bid for cleaning service at Creek View Elementary
