Columbiana honors small heroes

The Columbiana Angels All-Stars, who won the Dixie Girls Softball World Series, and the Shelby County Dizzy Dean All-Stars from Columbiana, who placed second in the Alabama Dizzy Dean Baseball Tournament, were guests of honor of the Columbiana City Council at its recent meeting.

&uot;I hope you know what a wonderful accomplishment our boys and girls have done,&uot; said Columbiana Mayor Allan Lowe to a standing room only crowd at city hall.

The girls were presented with plaques, medallions, T-shirts and a disc of photos from their world series action. The boys were presented with medallions.

The girls were coached by Columbiana councilmember Tim Billingsley, Louis Payne and head coach Ashley Phillips.

Players included Meagan Billingsley, Brooklynn Phillips, Chelsey O’Shields, Chelsey Dunnaway, Courtney Lawshe, Chasity Payne, Meagan Reddell, Josie Smith, Brittney Calma, Elizabeth Waldrop, Kailey Goodwin and Kira Chaudhry.

The boys were coached by Ed Oliver, Russell Rasco, Rodney Bunn and head coach Matt Dill.

Players included Nick Oliver, Blake Etress, Aaron Howard, Mailon McLeroy, Cale Thompson, Matt Vick, Matt Wilson, Timothy Robbins, Justin Mallory, Shawn Lacey, Dustin Bunn, Brandon Bunn, Jesse Silvers and Chuck Cofer.

In other matters the council:

Unanimously approved a rezoning request by J.P. Warren for a single family lot at the intersection of Butler and Depot streets to be rezoned from single family residential to business. The property will reportedly be used for a bail bonding business.

However, the business zoning approved by the council

carries two restrictions. The property cannot be subdivided and must remain a single lot, and the property must contain only one structure to keep from having more than one business.

In other matters the council:

Approved Bama Construction’s bid of $2,400 for the repair of a retention pond at the Columbiana Sports Complex. The successful bidder is also directed to work with City Planner Hilry King on the project.

Approved

a request from Columbiana United Methodist Church to make use of a temporary office trailer during construction and renovation work there. The church was given a time limit of six months to use the trailer subject to renewal.

Approved acceptance of a $20,000 grant from the county for use at the senior center.

Approved

a payment to Superior Concrete in the amount of $1,828.04 for a June invoice that was never received for repair of retention walls at the ball field.

Appointed Jason Head, Peg Hill and Robby Odgers to the Park and Recreation Board.

Appointed Franklin Clifton to the Beautification Board.

Appointed Conrad Fowler Jr., Frank &uot;Butch&uot; Ellis Jr. and John A. Jones to the Industrial Development Board.

Appointed Johnny Howard Jr., Parrish Argo, Bob Sauers and James Garner to the Downtown Revitalization Advisory Board
