Last season the Chelsea Hornets finished 0-10, but don’t tell new head coach Watt Parker that. &uot;We’re looking ahead and not behind,&uot; Parker said of last season’s outcome.

That was evident last Friday night as the Hornets rolled to a 41-6 win over in-county rival Vincent.

&uot;It was a great, total team effort,&uot; Parker said. &uot;And it was a great defensive effort. We had a short field for the offense and that makes the game a lot easier. The guys are working hard and believe that we can win.&uot;

The Hornets amassed 296 yards of total offense with 223 of that coming on the ground on 47 rushing attempts. Quarterback Zack Myers completed 6-of-8 passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns.

The Hornets allowed Vincent 171 yards &045; 89 rushing and 82 passing.

&uot;We just didn’t play very well at all,&uot; Vincent head coach Dwight Spradley said. &uot;But we have a lot of inexperience. That’s just something we are going to have to work on and we will get better every week.

&uot;We played hard, we just made too many mistakes that gave Chelsea the ball deep into our territory and gave them a short field.&uot;

According to Spradley, of Vincent’s 22 players, only six have more than a year of varsity experience.

Chelsea got on the board first taking advantage of a Vincent turnover. John Hillin capped the 2-play, 16-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown run. Jason Dunkerley added the PAT to give the Hornets a 7-0 lead.

Following a forced fumble by CHS’ Emmitt Sills, the Hornets were back in business on Vincent’s 27 yard line.

Myers capped a 4-play, 27-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Sam Russell. The PAT failed, but the Hornets had an early 13-0 lead.

Myers and Russell would hook up again for CHS’ third score of the night, this time from 31 yards out.

Myers completed the two-point conversion attempt to Russell to give the Hornets a 21-0 lead.

Garon Slaton blocked a Vincent punt to set up the Hornets’ next score. Clay Craft capped a 4-play, 22-yard drive with a 2-yard scamper for the score. Dunkerly added the PAT to give CHS a 28-0 lead.

CHS got their final score of the first half when Sills capped a 7-play, 38-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run.

The PAT failed, but the Hornets went into the locker room with a comfortable 34-0 lead at the half.

Chelsea got its final score of the night when Daniel Dempsey found the end zone on a 4-yard run to cap a 7-play drive. Dunkerly was good on the extra point, giving CHS a 41-0 lead.

Vincent’s lone score came with 9:09 left in the game when Desmond Yowe broke free for 36 yards to get the Yellow Jackets to the two yard line. Brent Garrett scored on a quarterback sneak one play later for the score.

The missed PAT made the final score 41-6.

For the Hornets, Russell had four catches for 54 yards and two touchdowns.

For the Yellow Jackets, Garrett was 3-for-5 for 42 yards while Adam Goodwin completed 3-of-9 passes for 40 yards. Desmond Yowe gained 43 yards on four attempts.

On the defensive side of the ball, CHS’ Rusty Lambert caused two fumbles and had one sack.

Sills recorded three solo tackles, deflected one pass and caused one fumble. Ryan Dempsey had four solo tackles and two assists.

For VHS defensively, Olando Robertson recorded 12 tackles, Maurice Kelley 10, Jerrod Datcher nine and Jason Ayala eight.

Next on the schedule for the Hornets is Hayden at home.

&uot;Hayden will be a great challenge,&uot; Parker said. &uot;They have some great looking athletes and they will get after you.&uot;

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets will travel to Westbrook Christian.

&uot;They spread the field and throw about two out of every three plays,&uot; Spradley said. &uot;They have a wide open passing attack. We will have to play much, much better in order to win.&uot;
