The stingy Oak Mountain High School defense allowed Fairfield only 44 yards of total offense last Friday night as the Eagles rolled to a 17-0 win in their season opener.

Senior Clay Dykes led the OMHS defense with 12 tackles with two for loss and junior Dan Glassco recorded 11 tackles with one for loss in the win.

&uot;Our defense played a great game,&uot; Oak Mountain head coach Toney Pugh said. &uot;We only gave up 44 yards total offense, so our defense stepped up for us.&uot;

Following a scoreless first quarter, the Eagles got on the board in the second when sophomore Ryan Fordham found the end zone. Nick Thomas added the extra point, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead at the half.

According to Pugh, Fordham was a bright spot for the Eagle offense.

&uot;Ryan, as a third string quarterback, wound up being our leading rusher,&uot; Pugh said. &uot;He made some good decisions and played a good game.&uot;

Thomas added to the Eagle lead with a 32-yard field goal in the third quarter, giving OMHS a 10-0 advantage heading into the final period of play.

Senior Jarod Pescatore set up the final Oak Mountain score of the night with a 45-yard punt return in the fourth quarter.

Fordham capped the scoring with a touchdown run, giving the Eagles the 17-0 win.

&uot;I thought overall we played well,&uot; Pugh said. &uot;We’ve still got some wrinkles to iron out on the offensive side of the ball, but our defense played really well.&uot;

Next up for the Eagles will be a road game at Bob Jones Friday night.

Bob Jones is coming off a 28-6 win over Lee-Huntsville last week.

&uot;They are big,&uot; Pugh said. &uot;Their defensive front averages about 270 pounds and their offensive line averages about 260. They have a big tailback and run the counter and option a lot. They will throw, too, mostly quick passes and hitches.&uot;

Pugh said he is looking for another big game from his defense Friday night.

&uot;Our defense should do well and keep us in it,&uot; Pugh said. &uot;Plus, we are only one or two things away from getting where we need to be on offense.&uot;
