The Shelby County Retired Teachers Association met Sept. 17, 2002, at the Shelby County Instructional Service Center in Alabaster, with 50 members attending.

In honor of Constitution Week, the theme for the table decorations was patriotism with the tables beautifully adorned with assorted centerpieces of red, white and blue.

Jimmy Bice reminded the crowd that the Constitution was signed on Sept. 17, 1787. He gave an overview of liberty, freedom and the wars that the United States has fought and won in order to maintain liberty. The veterans in the audience then led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Barbara Belisle sang a lovely rendition of &uot;God Bless America&uot; following the pledge. She also sang additional songs for the group including &uot;Memories.&uot;

Guest speaker was Chris Curry, chief deputy of the Shelby County

Sheriff’s Department and Republican nominee for sheriff. He gave an outstanding presentation on personal safety. Several handouts were given to retirees with suggestions on scam prevention and self protection. Sherilyn Osborne, District IV director, attended the meeting and brought the members up to date of ARTA personnel changes. She encouraged the group to increase its membership.

Following the meeting, a delicious lunch was served to the members. The next meeting will be Nov. 19 with guest speaker Janice Charlesworth, ARTA executive secretary
