It’s confusing, but try to keep up:

Calera travels to Luverne Friday night in a matchup which could decide the No. 1 spot in Region 3 of Class 2A. If Luverne wins, it will be the outright champion.

Here’s where it gets confusing. If Calera beats Luverne, and Goshen beats Highland Home, Calera is No. 1. However, if Calera wins and Highland Home wins, Highland Home gets the top spot. If Luverne wins and Highland Home wins, Calera is No. 3. If Luverne wins and Goshen wins, Calera could be No. 2. Got it?

Calera took a big step toward the No. 1 spot with a hard-fought, 14-10 win over Goshen last Friday night.

&uot;It wasn’t very pretty, but we did what we had to do to win and to put ourselves in a position to possibly be No. 1 in the region,&uot; Calera head coach Ken Adams said following his team’s win last Friday night.

Luverne is undefeated in region play while Calera’s lone loss came to Highland Home two week’s ago, 20-13. Adams said the road trip will be a tough test for his Eagles.

&uot;Luverne is a big, strong and complete team,&uot; Adams said. &uot;They are very well-coached and their kids sell in to what they do. We have got to play very well to win. It is going to be a game that comes down to defense, field position and turnovers. Whoever makes the least mistakes will win.&uot;

Calera is in the meat of its schedule, with three tough region tests in the last four weeks of the season.

&uot;We have three back-to-back very tough games against three of the best teams in the state in Class 2A,&uot; Adams said. &uot;But we are right where we want to be &045; playing for something in the last region game of the season. We just have to strap it on and at the end of 48 minutes hope we have left it all out on the field. That’s what we’ve done all year.&uot;

As for his team using a defensive and special teams touchdown to win the game, Adams said he’ll take it.

&uot;As long as when the clock reads zero at the end of the game and we are ahead, we’ll take it,&uot; Adams said. &uot;We’re not going to go out there and do things we don’t normally do just to say we did it. If we can win the game running the ball, we’re not going to throw because there’s no need to.&uot;

Adams credited his defense and special teams with the win last Friday night.

&uot;We gave them the ball inside the 20 three times and they only scored 10 points on us,&uot; Adams said. &uot;That’s a credit to the defense. And Andy Jones punted the ball well all night, pinning them deep in their own territory.&uot;
