Warriors make playoffs with win over Brookwood

The Thompson Warriors have worked hard the past few games and have now earned themselves the fourth and final spot in the Class 5A, Region 4 playoffs.

The team’s final game of the regular season will be next week against Oak Mountain, a Class 6A opponent.

But to earn that spot in the playoffs, the Warriors had to fight off Brookwood and they did, 49-6.

THS stepped up quickly last Friday night, scoring on their first possession when senior Andrew Hairston ran for a touchdown from the one-yard line. The successful extra point by senior quarterback and kicker Brett Rushing made the score 7-0 with 8 minutes, 40 seconds left in the first quarter.

The next score came with 3:46 left in the first quarter when Rushing passed 10 yards to senior Kenny Mahone. The successful PAT made the score 14-0.

Junior Warrior Eric Bogan scored from the four-yard line with 8:59 left in the second quarter. Rushing’s PAT made the score 21-0.

With 3:20 left in the half, Rushing threw a 12-yard pass to senior Gavin McGuire. The extra point made the score 28-0.

The final score before the half came with 1:09 left in the quarter. Rushing ran from the 7-yard line to make the score and then kicked the extra point. At the half, the score was 35-0.

Junior Jesse Mitchell scored from the 4-yard line with 5:39 left in the third quarter. The successful PAT made the score 42-0.

The final score came on a 28 yard run from freshman quarterback Daniel Hamlin. The successful PAT from freshman kicker Scott Elliott made the score 49-0.

Thompson head coach Ricky Seale was pleased with his team’s effort.

&uot;Our offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage and have been playing with a lot of consistency,&uot; he said.

On the offensive line are junior Nick Seagle, senior Ryan Winslett, senior Matt Myles, junior Dayton Tabor, sophomore Matt Penhale and senior Gavin McGuire at tight end.

Seale pointed out the hard work of the defense as well.

&uot;We have especially played well defensively the past few weeks,&uot; he said. &uot;Tony Bell, Kurt Jones, Alonzo Barrett, Casey Pnazek, Robin Oden, Shawn Manzano, Kenny Mahone and Tony Myers have really stepped it up.&uot;

The Warriors rushed 271 yards to Brookwood’s 206 yards. THS passed for 104 yards to zero from BHS.

Rushing attempted nine passed with seven completions and no interceptions. Brookwood had six attempts with no completions and one interception.

Thompson had one fumble lost; Brookwood had two fumbles lost.

Thompson had zero punts; BHS had three punts for 18.7 yards.

Leading rushers for the Warriors were junior Eric Bogan who rushed nine times for 67 yards and one touchdown. Senior Andrew Hairston rushed six times for 33 yards and one touchdown; and Brett Rushing rushed four times for 24 yards and one touchdown
