Jackets lose in 3 OTs

The Vincent Yellow Jackets battled West Blocton through three overtimes last Friday night,

finally bowing out 38-35 on an 18-yard field goal by the visitors.

The loss came on the same night the Vincent High School football field was named in honor of the school’s retiring athletic director Harold Garrett.

The defeat dropped the Jackets to 2-8 overall,

2-5 in regional play and marked

the end of a long season for fans of the yellow and black.

Vincent head football coach Dwight Spradley said early on in the season the team saw some players quit and some go down to injury.

But he said the last three or four games saw his team play some of its best football.

He said next year’s team is &uot;still going to be real young&uot; as the Jackets will graduate 10 senior players for this year’s squad.

Spradley said to help the cause next season, &uot;Some guys will have to come out, get in the weight room and work.&uot;

Against West Blocton, the Jackets rushed for 229 yards and passed for 175 yards for a total of 404 yards of offense.

They held their opponents to 218 yards on the ground and 40 through the air.

The Jackets suffered no turnovers, scrapped for 14 first downs and were penalized 9 times for 37 yards.

While the Jackets did fumble 3 times, they recovered all of those.

West Blocton made 18 first downs, was penalized 5 times for 25 yards and lost 2 out of 3 fumbles.

But the nail in the coffin for VHS was an 18-yard field goal by West Blocton’s Sammy Hill.

The score was 22-22 at the end of regulation; 29-29 at the end of the first overtime; and 35-35 at the end of the second overtime.

The leading rusher for the Jackets were Desmond Yowe, who had 189 yards and one touchdown.

And

Jamal Jordan led pass receivers with 3 catches for 97 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Yowe on a 44-yard run with a Kendall Fair point after.

Jamal Jordan on a 31-yard pass from Adam Goodwin and Fair point after.

Jordan on a 58-yard pass from Goodwin and a two-point conversion pass from Goodwin to Kit Barnes.

Andre McKinney on a 12-yard pass from Steven Adams with Fair point after.

Maurice Kelley on a 1-yard run
